We're looking for comparisons between the Lightscribe media and writers vs the inkjet systems. Does anyone have experience with both? We found a few external lightscribe writers for $159, the lightscribe CDs 5 for $5 and the lightscribe DVD for about $2 each. The only inkjet disc writers we found are $1000.00 and up. Are there other inexpensive options (other than a sharpie or stickers) for writing on disc?

I've got the epson r-200 and I am very happy with it. Quality full hub prints and near original dvd covers.$80 at sams club. I've seen them under $50 on the web,but probably re-furbished?The r-300 has a card reader and the R-320 has both card reader and a view screen.
The nicest thing about it is I get the 6 set ink cartridges for under $20. They are even cheaper when you buy 2 or more sets at private abacus24/7.com
I also have the hp 640c lightscribe sitting in a box. The compatability of that burner is not as great as my benqs.
I don't know about external lightscribe burners, but if my HP pc didn't come with a lightscribe burner, I'd get the benq 1625 or 1640!
You can place them in an external enclosure to use.
Canon has a model, but I believe you can only get it in europe?
Good Luck!

You are right Saugmon, the Canon CD/DVD printers are only available in Europe. Those $49 Epsons are after a rebate (you have to purchase the printer along with a 3.2 megapixel digital camera or a PC bundle). I picked up my Epson at Best Buy for $80. I got my TY white inkjet printables from Rima.com for $0.64/disc with shipping included. Personally, I like the inkjet printables better, and if I want the hologram effect, I'll get some silver inkjet printables.
I am sort of intrigued by this CIS:

Thanks for all the GREAT ideas! I'll shop the local SAMS and Best Buy to see who has the best deal. I imagine these printers need special printable CD & DVD media, do you have a recommendation there?
Thanks

i second that suggestion for the TYS...i have the silver printables...about the same price...i just have a thing for the "holographic" reflective look over the white printables..personal preference only~ not saying one is better than the other...as long as the MEDIA is good, aesthetically, it's your choice. i only use Taiyo Yuden printables, i don't have that many, but they are great w/ my Epson R300~ :)

The non european version of the canon ip series printers can print
on dvd's all you need is the tray and make a few changes in service mode.I have both the epson R200 and a american ip 3000 that now prints on disc. The epson print software is much better than the canon though.

Hey guys,
I'm seriously considering an ink jet for DVD printing and after saugmon's reccommendation and seeing others who second it I will go and see if I can find an epson R-200 locally. Anyway does anyone know of a website where I can download authentic DVD prints as seen on the originals? I've done a google search but as yet have not been able to find exactly what I was looking for.
Any help is appreciated

Sorry for the newb question but how does this work?
Do you use the actually DVD in the Inkjet printer? Does the printer, print directly on the DVD or are you talking about a sticky label?
I assume you are talking about direct printing onto the Disk since you guys are talking about white and silver?
Is this easy to set up with these printers?
Also, how do you tell which kind of DVD's are injet printable? Do they have to say it on the packaging?

The DVD inserts in a "tray" like your player. There are certain disks that say inkjet printable on the packageing. The surface is such that the ink is absorbed onto the surface of the disk. Here is a picture of the epson being discussed above:
at Sams club:
Epson Stylus Photo R200 Printer
Model: C11C546011
# 5760x1440 dpi
# Prints 4" x 6" photo in as fast as 39 seconds
# Prints borderless photos
# Includes photo software
Item: 943511
Hope this helps

I have a Canon Pixma ip3000 (North America) and hope to convert it to print on CD's.
I ordered a Canon cd tray on eBay and with the instructions below, will give it a shot.
