Recently I have been having a problem with Windows ME. After my PC is on for a few minutes, it automatically reboots even when in the middle of doing something.
Does anyone have any idea why this is? It only happens when I boot Windows ME and not with Windows 2000.
So far this hasn't happened while in the middle of burning a DVD, but I am not going to take a chance. Also, I am assuming that after a while my Hard Disk will be ruined.
During the past few days I have made these changes:
Got DSL
Slowly removing programs and backing up files (approx 3gigs a day) to format and reinstall Windows ME.
Do you think this is a Windows related issue? Possibly hardware? However nothing new was installed except for Ethernet card and its driver.
Always the same thing ? Ripping DVD's Encoding DVDs ?
Some programs like DVDShrink, encoding video is very CPU intensive, and some people have HEAT problems.
Is this your case ?

I had PCs where the OS was so corrupted, I had to reformat the HD and reinstalled. There was way too much junk on there, and it's started to work weird.
It can be anything from browsing the internet to opening a file. You may be right about the windows thing though. I do have lots of Junk. I have about 10 gigs of installed software!!!
I had winME on a differn HD as well, but I formatted so I cannot test it. I will eventually get to formatting and reinstalling windows. I wonder if I should just go with Windows 2000 Pro to dual boot with itself or to use XP and Win2k? Also, I will have to reinstall win2k in order to be able to dual boot.
I also want to get a Linux OS to see what it's like, but I do not even know how to down load it. There are two types of iso files. Then I would have to figure out how to install it.
Get yourself a good spyware cleaner, reg cleaner and virus software. Had a problem with phones in my home and DSL was off when I plugged it back into my computer it got hijacked by malcious spyware, kept shutting down the comp and I had no control, had to reformat. After that I plug directly into a router.
Hmm... I guess I should check for spyware as that is a possibility. I have Ad-Aware se Pro 1.05 and Spybot search and destroy 1.3. Should these be fine, or should I get some more?
Also, I have a speedstream 4100 DSL modem. Is this also a router?
SpyBot is good too. I also have speedstream modem, got SBC. No router is what you plug into if you do networking. I go wireless to my laptop from my desktop.
Unplanned reboots can have a number of causes. Heat build up included. I open case and cleaned processor heat sink and fan as well as the case fans and power supply fan. Then problem was better but unplanned reboots still happened once in a while. I kept case open and could see the processor fan changing speeds, slower and faster, for no apparent reason. Changing the processor heat sink and fan solved the problem entirely.
Other causes could be bad RAM or bad video card. Easy to check these possiblities if you have access to spare parts
The thing is, it is only when I boot Windows Me and not 2000. And when it reboots it just does it out of nowhere. There is no warning or anything. Just like when you press the reset button.
My Ad-Aware scan showed nothing. I will do a virus scan later on.
I also run Sygate Firewall Personal Pro 5.5 and Symantec Anti-Virus. So Mal-ware and viruses are pretty hard to get by.
All I need to do is get all my serials from the Windows Me and confirm that all my files are backed up, but it doesn't give me enough time.
