and in arniebear's case there, there are some scans that are most definitely worth doing!

@arniebear
Your scans are excellent.
My scans are excrement.
We both scanned genuine TY, O.K?
Now since my TY's are real and conventional wisdom says they are the best, somehow my burner's firmware tells Nero that the scan is poor, but when a no-name brand is inserted, the cunning dog reports less errors!
I'm going back to alcohol dependency.
@akyllonen
Lest we forget.Regarding my media suppliers review feature.
Quote: What is the excuse here....nothing bad is taken out...pretty much nothing but glowing remarks here for TY's. Do you think aD censors GOOD posts on Memorex? No. (Maybe they should though!)
This E-tailer does not offer Memorex media.
The reviews of the TY media are uniformly good.
All reviews of all media are also uniformly good.
One reviewer who had the temerity to offer a 4.5 out of 5 was referred to as an "idiot" then another offered that he was a "moron".
So it seems that not all negative remarks are censored.

From an "Oldtimer" but newbie to DVD media, ripping and burning I will always go with experience. I just "backed up" a few movies using Maxell 8x (Ritek 05's) and they worked great. However, I am ordering Taiko Yuden's tomorrow. And thanks for everyones opinion and sharing your experience. That's what these forums are for. One question, my dvd burner supports 16X. Should I purchase the 16X TY dvd media, stay with 8x or go with a slower speed. As I was scanning thru the forums, I thought I read a post saying that the slower speed media is the way to go for backing up movies? I use DVD Decrypter, Shrink 3.2 and of course Nero for burning.
Thanks again.

@ pager 651, you tried to help a guy, but you hijacked a thread & started talking about something completely different. You just screamed off at a tangent. It is not in the spirit of this forum. You or the other chap should have started a different thread for that!

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I use both quality (TY) and budget (Ritek/Ridata) media depending on what it is and who it's for. I recently tried some Prodisc as my new budget brand and they are definitely the worst I've ever tried. They freeze briefly when playing on my player and won't play at all on my PC. I think I'll just stick with my TY and Ritek/Ridata combo.
I guess I'll have to add the 2 cakeboxes of Prodisc to my stockpile of "given-up-on" media which includes 3 cakeboxes of Memorex, 2 cakeboxes of Mitsumi and 2 cakeboxes of Princo).

Hey all,
Most of you on this thread know me and definately know the threads about my support for the Memorex media (still funny stuff, look back at it often)
Anyways, regardless of what is said, anyone should buy whatever media they feel comfortable with. But it definately goes without saying that the TY craze is all the buzz around on aD.
I have since been a MAJOR supporter for Memorex media, and even though I caught a lot of jokes about it and stuff, it is still good media...TO ME! Kinda regardless of how I burn it.
As far as advice, Memorex media is pretty much known as the "black sheep" of dvd media. If you like to use them or any other brands, definately give it a shot. It doesn't hurt to try all brands, I have tried several myself.
Speaking of TY, I am about to buy my first set. If all goes well and I like the outcome, then I will continue buying them. If not, then I will find something else. Simple as that.
Nobody can tell you how to spend YOUR money...although they can offer suggestions. If you want to spend it on TY, go ahead, Memorex..go ahead, Ritek...go ahead. Just whatever you feel comfortable with.
Anyways, to you all that I know...HI!!!!
:P

Venom, good to see a post from you, miss all your defense of Memorex. It has been too easy to sway posters from the dark side since you have not been around to defend said media. You are right though, it is whatever works best for you and your burner, and if you like the media then go with it. Hope to see you posting more ;)

hiya Venom.
you see, you're different about the much maligned Memorex, you're ok using it, and you're careful how you recommend it to others. It's the careless recommending of bad media that causes the problems.
I'm on here most nights and i still cannot believe how many noobs sign up each day with problems caused mainly by crap media. We fix all the firmware etc problems, they try again, and it's always the crap media left to still cause failing burns. Drives me mad :)

Yeah I know creaky, it can be frustrating...like the whole issue regarding the "search" feature that I was into.
But like all things, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em drink."
I definately hear ya about the media issue, hell I still get teased about the Memorex, but you know, all you can do is just say, "<Insert media here> might get you a better outcome for pixelation issues, or what have you." Believe me, it is frustrating to some extent. But the best thing is just give them all the info they can use to make a more sound choice. If they don't want to listen, well...hehe....they waste their money. It isn't your money, so you don't even have to worry about it.
But your facts are great as well as others who give a good overall view of the media. (You know who you are!)
So, drink this...(shoots a beer over to creaky) and keep posting up good facts! I will admit, that some of the stuff you posted have made my decision on choosing another brand, cause with my Memorex media and d/l'ed movies, I am having pixelation issues. Only reason why I am saying that is because I am not biased towards one type. So even Memorex has issues, but I have still have had GREAT success on dvdrips.
BTW...how come you all regulars are never in the irc chan?! Don't make me come after you!

I'm currently burning a 100 pack of Ritek DVD-R's with no problems with either data or video. Drive? Plextor 716-A. Speeds? Data at 8x. DVD Video (from old TV show SVCD mpg files) at 4x. The medis seems to work fine for me. Maybe I got a good batch!
I've had great luck with real 8x TY & 4x MCC (Maxell) yellowtops. Recently I cleaned the shelf of 2 Walgreens of the 10 pack Japanese Maxells. Not for the price but just because it's good media.
CD's? I've got about 80 Ritek's to go through (will be burned as audiodiscs) plus about 280 Memorex (Prodisc) color CDR's. The Memorex was $1.99 per package (they were cleaning out inventory) so I took a single 25 pack to test it (it was fine for audio at either 16 or 32x) then cleaned out the store stock of both the 25 pack spindles & the 10 packs with color cases.
I had good luck with a 100 pack of Lead Data (GQ from Fry's) CDR's that were fine for audio. Lots better than the two 100 packs of CMC Memorex & Imation that wouldn't burn well over 32x and was awful for audio above 4x. I'm not buying any Lead Data after that (even though the discs burned & played fine) since Ritek & TY CDR's are much better quality.
