maxells are generally regarded as pretty good, i consider them decent personally, but not on the same level as Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim from my OWN experiences...
also, media codes are different on the maxells depending on where they were made...do you by chance know if your media was made in taiwan or made in japan? i prefer the japanese ones personally...you could find out by using a media identifier program such as dvdinfopro to find out the media coding...
www.dvdinfopro.com run one of those maxells through the program after you download and install it, it will tell you the coding...
i have a nec3520a and maxells work just fine with it, but my pioneer drive is somewhat more picky...but, as long as you use good media, you should be fine...to touch up upon your initial question in the thread...your blank media SHOULD NOT be coming out "scratched", as arniebear suggested, it seems like there is something misaligned INSIDE your drive, whether it be the lens or some other internal components...canned air MIGHT work, but if your burner is producing these "scratched discs" it might be time for a replacement...how long have you had this burner? it sounds like it's on it's last leg...
