Okay, I've read just enough to see that these two movies, with the same actor (Ice Cube) are not getting past DVDS or DVDD Humm? What gives, I like the theory that they are bad pressed, b/c each errors out at same percent level of DVDS initial read. I've check two seperate disk for each, and its looking like a sneaky copyright protection gimick or just bad presses from the manufacturer that they are pawning off to BB.

So, anyother thoughful analysisssisisiss?

There are some bad presses.
You can do with DVDD,rip the files to the HD,then compress with shrink and write with DVDD.
Both AWTY and XXX can be done this way.
If you use shrink only,AnyDVD will work and burn with DVDD.

Anydvd has a free trial, clink on AnyDVD and you can dowload and install.
It works in the background, you won't even know it working unless you open the log.

DVD Shrink cannot rip the new Arcos encryption, which is used by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures.
You can either use AnyDVD to run in the background while you use DVD Shrink
Or you can use another program like DVDDecrypter to rip it to your hard drive.
Then, use the DVDShrink "OPEN FILES" feature

The new "Arcos encryption" sounds like a title to a good movie.

I've returned AWTY and XXX but it'l be an interesting experiment to try AnyDVD, as indicated above, to test the Arcos Encryption theory above.

I'll let you know.

Theory?

This form of copy protection (Sony ARccOS, note the spelling) is well-documented (complete with press releases). Here is one of several, which can be found using any search engine:

http://www.sonydadc.com/americas/news.news3.go

The solutions (which include the one mentioned by three posts in a row above), but also there are many other options) are also easy to find. Search is your friend.

I strongly urge you to read this page which follows, carefully:

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=48842

You will note that BOTH of the films you mentioned are among the ones listed that use Sony ARccOS.

Also, note that (apparently) every new Sony DVD, or Columbia DVD, or Columbia Tri-Star DVD, or Tri-Star DVD which is released will have this form of copy protection on it, which deliberately screws up the structure of some files on the DVD in order to try to defeat the various ripping programs which are on the market.

Take care,

-Bruce

The combo of cloneDVD2 and AnyDVD worked just fine on these two dvds I'm using AnyDVD 5.4.1.1

@gstat10

You get a free 21 day trial of AnyDVD. I don't think I was halfway through the three weeks before I purchased it. Great program, can't recommend enough!

I'm having the same kind of problem with XXX: State of the Union. Now I'm trying to put it on my HDD with DVDD and then open files with DVDShrink and you know the rest. The only problem is that I'm not able to do that since one of the files (VTS_01_1.VOB) just doesn't want to get copied. I get an I/O error, or something like that. Anyone know how I could get past that?

So now I'm also thinking about trying another way but I don't know which one is the best. Do you know any software that I could get for free? I heard about AnyDVD but I don't want to pay for it so I'm stuck with only the free trial. Any other good softwares?

Thanks for the help!

You can try DVD FabDecrypter which is free and available at http://www.filepedia.com. Or DVD43 also free at filepedia. Your best bet is the trial of AnyDVD and CloneDVD it really works.

Very interesting. I had no problems burning AWTY? I can't remember which program I used, but all I use is Shrink & Decrypter & I haven't had any movies I couldn't make backups of yet. Knock on wood. 1 thing I have noticed is with some movies, is in Shrink after you open the disc, when you choose Back Up, the original disc is region coded. You're asked if you want to make the backup disc Region Free or leave the RCE encoding untouched. If you choose to make the backup disc region free, you have to "guess" what region the original disc is coded for in order to strip it off. I tried the region free option with 'Dune' & I was unable to make the backup. Maybe I just chose the wrong region, I don't know. I tried again choosing to leave the region coding untouched & I was successful. Ever since then I just choose to leave the coding untouched when I'm prompted.

I was finally able to make a backup copy with only DVDShrink and DVDD. The problem was that I used an older version of DVDD. So you might want to check which version you have of BOTH softwares.
