how is that a 2hr56min dvd fit on a 120min dvd-r???

Duh it WAS compressed before it was tranfered from a DVD-9 to a DVD-5

2 hrs and 56 mins is all?

Try getting 3 hrs and 20 mins onto a 4.36 gig disc! AKA, DVD Shrink

Dvd shrink will compress those DVD-9 movies onto a standard DVD-5 disc.It's free.

as said its a compression thing to fit dvdr5 4.38gig, it may say 4.7 on the box / wrapper...
