Does anyone know after my DVD Shrink finishes encoding the dvd movie, and when Nero is about to start, I get an error saying, "Power Calibration Error! Failed @ 4x." I just recently got my PC repaired, and my friend said I need a new BIOS battery for my motherboard. I'm thinking if that's my problem. Because as I scrolled down the error message in nero. It says something about 384 ram memory used 184 or something? Oh yeah.. I've been using Fujifilm, Memorex, and TDK. But Recently I've been using fujiiflm.

How many discs has this happened for, because i had a batch of Ritek that were just a bad batch about 10 in a row. I got power calibration error for each disc and then all of a sudden i stopped getting the error and i havnt had it since and that was a while ago to. Give a different media a try or maybe upgrade firmware?

The burn process begins with a series of checks to set the correct laser power level. This process is initiated by the burning program and performed by the burner. If the process fails then you get a Power Cal error. This has nothing to do with your memory or bios battery.

As Dude2099 said, try some different media, this may be and usually is the cause. A dirty laser may also cause this.

Make sure the burner's firmware is up to date as this controls the OPC.

Here is some more OPC info:

Just right now I finally burned a DVD with no errors. I did it with disc drive to disc drive instead of files. I don't know how it worked, but does anyone happen to know why it started to work again. I just tried another TDK DVD-R and it worked.

if you get any more power calibration errors - ......

9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service

I already reused some of the tdk dvd-r's I've had. And used some new ones, and I still get power calibration errors. Does anyone know how to fix this problem for real? I did the Nero Burning Problem update, and DVD-RW firmware. I really want to get this problem fixed, because I can't burn my dvd's anymor.e

right... i think it's time to find out exactly which TDK's you have. i know what my suspicion is but let's prove it. download dvdinfopro (free from dvdinfopro.com), run of those TDK's thru it's media info check, pasting results here...

I read somewhere it meant your burner was near the end of its life. Could also be dust on the lens. I got that message on some CDR media, and when I reduced the burn speed from32X to 8X, it worked fine. I also sometimes got that error on DVD media. I just turned off the PC, let it cool for 1/2 hour, and it burned fine. Then I would try burning a few hours later and would get the power calib error. Heat?
