Hey guys, this is a great site, loads of useful info, so here is another cry for help!! Burned an image file (off the net) the other day and everything was perfect on my dvd player, so started backing up my movies. Tried to burn 1 for a test and it looks fine but is really jerky and stops all the time, play perfect in my pc. Using infiniti discs and used dvd shrink to compress it and burned it with nero.

Only thing I could think was the burn speed of the dvd was 6x, is this too fast? Would try it but don't want to waste any more discs!

Thanks for any advice

that could be too fast, but I'm thinkin the problem is NTSC/PAL. If you live in North America you'll want to use NTSC, if you live in Europe you'll want to use PAL. The rest of the world, I have no clue. Here's a thread explaining how to convert if necessary and to at least see which format it's in: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/167922

The first post says it all.

it IS media, you just jinxed yourself by saying it is not~!

Infiniti DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AE1 8x (CRAP)

Infiniti DVD-R 4.7GB LONGTEN 001. 4x (even worse CRAP)

Infiniti DVD-R 4.7GB OPTODISCK001 4x (ouch, little better, but still NOT good)

Infiniti DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.E01 8x (CRAP again)

Infiniti DVD+R 4.7GB DAXON...AZ1 4x (Crap comparable to LONGTEN stuff)

shall i continue or do you get the idea? hehe. your problems do in fact arise from media...do yourself a favor, get some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim blank dvds, your success will be much higher~ :) good luck

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Thanks for the replys guys but I don't think that this is the answer. Squizzle, it can't be PAL/NTSC problem, because my dvd player is multi region and my tv can play both. This has been proved by the fact that I play both region 1 and 2 discs without any problem.

kivory666 suggested that it may be the discs, which is a possibility, but my point was that because I had previously burned a couple that worked perfect, that it mustn't be. Although I accept that the discs may not be the best quality. Heres a look at the discs I bought:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=9516628361&...

I'm going to try it on my old PC as that is where I burnt the old discs, will let you know how it goes guys.

Thanks again for the advice

This is not true. Some crap media plays fine for a couple of months, then they're completely useless. Some are borderline bad/ok, which may be your case. With those, half may work and half may not.

Also, a lot of DVD media companies (Memorex is the worst with this) just buy their media from whoever sells it cheapest and put their label on them. Get a program called DVD Identifier: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to find out who really made your discs. Then there's a link that takes you to an online database that rates the discs.

Your new burner probably does not like this brand of disk, not all burners will accept all media. Check and make sure the new Sony's firmware is up to date, this may correct the problem with disk recognition.

buy some decent media. ps just cus they say they're using Misubishi media doesn't necessarily mean they're not made by CMC.

plus i've had a run-in with Ebuyer, over their selling of FAKE Taiyo Yuden media (ie Bulkpaq Orange).

Hiya Rotary, this is where I get my media from,

http://www.dvd-and-media.com/dvd%2Brw-media.htm

I use the Traxdata 4x +RW. Have burnt about 150 so far, no probs at all. They arrive in about 2 days too! Well chuffed. I have found my ideal media!

Kind regards, always,

Pulsar

It works out at 62p per disc delivered. I am happy with that. Are the verbs you mentioned 4x +RW? That's all I use.
Have you a link please Creaky?

Hey guys, sorry for not replying, been away for a couple of days. Just tried burning in my old pc, works a treat, can't believe my new one doesn't! Anyway at least I can backup my dvds now. Just a shame it doesn't work with my new pc.

Thanks guys

What is the current firmware of your sony burner. As I stated previously the sony may not like the disks you are using, whereas your old one burns them fine.

I am not 100% sure, the model is Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. Had a look at the firmaware page suggested above but it states that there is no formware update available for this drive. It possibly is the media, will try something new, but won't be for a while because I still have about 15 discs left!!!

If anyone knows if there is a firmware update for this drive I would be extremely grateful.
