Hi. I've seen a lot on these forums about dual layer discs. I have a dual layer burner. If/ When I get a Dual layer game, can I just copy it the normal way, and burn it as a dual layer disk, then use swap magic,
or is there something else to it ? It seems like a lot of people are going through a lot of trouble that could be solved by buying a dual layer burner, but maybe I am missing something ?

Yep, you are missing a very important piece of information... swap magic will not play dual layer backup discs. I think you'll find that most people on here do have a dual layer burner.. as that's the norm now anyway. The ONLY way you can play dual layer backups at the moment is to have a modchip installed into your ps2 and use toxics dual layer patcher on the iso of the game then burn it onto dual layer disc.

If it's a dual layer game, such as GT4 or GoW, you can not do a 1:1 back up and then play it using Swap Magic. However, you can still play those games if you rebuild them - that is rebuild the game from a DVD 9 (dual layer) to a DVD 5 (single layer). Check out the forums for how to rebuild GT4 and GoW.

Yep. To simplify, to play a DVD DL backup you must do one of the following:

A. Use a rebuilding kit to shrink it down to a DVD5, burn and boot any normal way (swap disc or modchip).
B. Apply Toxic Dual Layer patch to image, burn to DVD DL, then boot with any modchip.
C. Burn to DVD DL, then boot with a modchip with DL support built in (dms4 and matrix infin).

So if I get a mod chip compatible with DL disks I don't need Toxic patch? Just make a backup of my original and push play?
I'm using Toast 6 on a DL iMac.

Thats correct. Essentially the modchip applies the patch on-the-fly for you.
