Hello Everyone
Can anyone please tell me why a Philips dvd+r double layer disc won't write in a Philips dvd double layer burner. This has boggled my brain. It burns in a Sony burner but not Philips.
When I tried to burn using my Philips burner and clone dvd 2 it said "write error bad media".
I than tried it with a Sony external burner and it worked fine. I thought a Philips dvd double layer disc would work in a Philips double layer burner.
Any ideas as to why this is.... Thanks in advance....

Phillips is bad about buying their media from the lowest bidder. Just because it is branded as phillips doesn't mean it is made by phillips, more than likely cmc mag, which is garbage. Use this free proggy to ID your discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

mort..... you might be correct but I have the Philips DVD-+RW 8631 DL and the first thing I did was use Philips DLs and also Memorex DLs...... and guess what? Both worked just fine. The Memorex was made by Ritek, and the Philips was made by CMC! and according to DigitalFAQ: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm Ritek is much better than CMC CRAPOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

IHoe,

Could be. Everybodys setup and situation is different. Gotta start somewhere. Thats why I ask Zenon003 to ID the discs. It may be due to firmare not being current. Model # and f/w vs would help.

10-4 I don't know what the difference is between dell firmwares and the brand name oem firmwares. As long as it's working good don't mess with it. Your drive is an oem benq DW1620 BTW. If you ever want to learn more about your dvdrw check this site out. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92

Ihoe, congradulations on your phillips burner being a benq! Welcome to the family bro. My first I/O magic 16x is a benq 1620.Still have original B7-C9 firmware on it. I wouldn't touch a thing on it. It burns everything great, including those dreaded cmags.
I just did my first dual layer backup on friday and it turned out perfect.

Thank you very much for your info. I checked with the program you suggested and Philips double layer discs, the ones I have, are manufactured by CMC Magnetics.
I also checked Verbatim double layer disc and it is manufactured by Mitubishi, Verbatim do work.
My drive is a Philips DVDR 1640 and has the latest firmware. It now makes sense why Philips double layer discs won't work. The Philips drive does'nt recognise the manufacturer CMC, at least not the 1640 anyway.
Thanks again...

Zenon003,

You're very welcome. You would think the same brand dvd's as your dvdrw would work togather but unfortunately that is not always the case. Sorry you forked out that money for those high dollar phillips DL dvd's just to find out they were garbage. Experience is the best teacher. Stick with those verbatums and you shouldn't have any problems. FYI some other brand name media to be leary of is memorex and HP besides phillips. Also stay away from no name media and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa.

It's very unfortunat that phillips doesn't make all their own media. The media I have found to actually be made by phillips is very good IMO. One example are sony dvd+rw's (media code phillips 041).

BTW your drive is also an oem benq DW1620.

It's amazing on what mfg codes the firmware is allowed to burn. They usually go through rigorous tests either with the manufacturer or independent testing facilities and they are the ones that decide the recommendations of what safe media those burners are allowed!

They can't burn their own brand name media, WTF is up with that?

Cmag dvd-5 may not be the best, but I'd hate to try the cmag dvd-9 media. Pretty scary! Verbatim dlp +r dl for me only!

Mort beat me to it. Edit:
Looks like another lucky winner for Zeonon003. Sweet, another Phillips Benq!

I've heard many a posts about dell using junky phillips burners and had to swap them out with Necs. Did dell finally make a wise choice and going with the benq's from now on? It's another twist!
This may also explain what I heard about benq using the phillips chip-set,I think that's how you say it?

Is benq, model DW1620, the manufacturers of the Philips dvdr 1640, I am a little confused about this.
Does anyone know where I can buy double layer verbatim DVD+R disc's at a reasonable price?
This info has really taught me something. It is amazing how manufacturers like Philips are misleading customers. Even though I have bought Philips disc's that have turned out to be not so good, I am getting a solid lesson from you good people so really it may not have been a waste of money totally.

Zenon003,

The phillips 1640 is a rebadged benq DW1620. In other words it is basically the same drive but uses phillips firmware. It can be crossflashed to benq firmware. Look here for more info.http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=145326

As far as good prices for DL media, check at these online stores, supermediastore.com, rima.com, newegg.com, and meritline.com. You can also check your local retail store sales flyers eg. best buy, circuit city, office depot, staples, walmart, sams club etc. You could even pm saugmon as he keeps an eye out for sales on media at local stores more than I.
