i know nothing about digital camera's,and need to buy one

i want to spend as little as possible, but get great quality at the same time,
my budget is about £150- 200,that is for everything,camera/memory card etc
how many photos do these cards hold?,
i know they hold more,if the memory is bigger, but i need numbers

or am i better off buying a camcorder, that will record, and take photos,at the same time?

where is the cheapest place on-line to get such items?,i dont want to buy the wrong item

any help is with thanks

regards hursty

If you go to your local retailer then you can check the package of the memory card to see how many it will hold at various Megapixel ratings. My recomendation would be a camera with at least 3 megapixels with a minimum of 3X optical zoom. Don't be fooled by large digital zoom numbers. Digital zoom can be ok in minimal usage, but blurs the image when used at higher levels. Shop around and find the highest megapixel and optical zoom rating available in your price range.

Just a little google for ya...

cheers for the advice
it seems the higher quality camera(in pixel terms)uses up more memory, than the lower quality ones, which means a 512 mb card on a 4 million pixel camera, will hold less pictures then if the same 512 mb card was used on a 1 million pixel card, which, although obvious, its not something i thought about!
so cheers
think i will go for a sony

My entry level Kodak has a 5 Mpixel rating. On max quality settings(5Mpixels) I can fit around 100 images on my 128 meg SD card. They come out about 1MB each and have a size of around 2500x1900 pixels. I gave $200 US or about 112 British pounds for the camera. My only wish is for a bit more optical zoom as I'm limited to 3x only.

I've noticed you're leaning towards the Sony cameras. They are indeed nice. I'm not a big fan though as the "memory stick" seems to almost be a Sony exclusive. Meaning you'll have to buy another Sony if you upgrade/buy another camera and want to continue to use your additional memory. I like some of the other formats like SD for the ability to use it in a wide range of camera brands. But I'm no expert in the digital camera world so don't take just my word. Let google be your guide.....do some research.
