so I can try the booktyping we've been talking about. Went with friends today, to Wilmington, to see our goddaughter, who is in college. She lives about three blocks away from a Best Buy. Guess where I just HAD to go? :o)
Looking at the dvd blanks, I found some Fuji +R discs, made in Japan. It was a 25 pk. for $9.99. Of course, I had to get a pk. Will be in a bind, next week, but........ Oh well!
When we got home, I put one in the computer, and ran KProbe2, to check it. It showed up as a Taiyo Yuden (YUDEN000T02). So, they are the real thing. I have no idea how long they're on sale. Today may have been the last day. Maybe not! If you are near one, you may want to check, or call them. Sorry if this was mentioned in another post. Just wanted to pass it along...........

Yeah, I have learned that. But mine does support booktyping. I have a LiteOn 1633S. The booktyping works very well. I took a booktyped disc (movie), to my parent's house and tried it in a player they have, that never would play a +R or -R disc. But, booktyped to DVD-Rom, it played perfectly. I have put a couple of store bought movies in computer, and checked booktype, and they were both DVD-Roms. I'm glad I learned this little trick................ :o)

Thx............. you too! :o)
I downloaded a little utility called "BookType 135" from the LiteOn site (I think that's where I got it). It works very well, and is almost instantaneous. I don't know if it matters or not, but I leave the little window open in the background, after booktyping, until it finishes burning. If you haven't tried this utility, you should!

If you have Nero, just make sure to have the settings in the "options" set to "automatic" and every time you perform back up, it will automatically set the booktype into a DVD-ROM format. That is what I did and all my dvd players are loving it.

This booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can?t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can?t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Still CSS keys can?t be written to DVD+R discs because every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that?s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.

@pacman
need to know what burner you have & what firmware too? may not be possible with what you have now..give some info
but using nero, open nero, go to the tool kit, select cd/dvd speed, on the top menu bar, select 'extra' and in the drop down menu, you will see 'bitsetting'

I have never had a problem with my back-ups playing in any of the standalone players, yet I was interested in the book-set feature in Nero. I follow the directions yet in the drop down there was nothing that showed bookset or bit set. Am I doing something wrong, or is it something that I do not need to be concerned. I have an internal NEC Dl Burner and external (firewire connected) sony DRU 800 DL. Any infor would help! Thanks

@pacman25,

Here is an easy steps to set your "book type setting" from a DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format using Nero.

01) on your desktop, double click on your "Nero StartSmart" icon.
02) on the "arrow drop down menu" select either "DVD or CD/DVD"
03) select/mouse your "copy and backup" icon (the 2 silver discs & camera icon)
04) click on "Copy DVD" (now Nero Express should automatically come up)
05) click on "Options"on the right hand next to your "Source drive" and "Destination drive".
06) now under "Book Type Setting" on the lower left corner, arrow it down and select either "Automatic" or "DVD-ROM", then click "OK", and presto... you're done, that's it.

07) now exit out and everytime you perform a dvd back up using Nero regardless if it's Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express, NeroVision Express, or Recode it will "automatically" set your back up as a DVD-ROM format in prior to back up.

NOTE: I set mine to "Automatic" in the "Book Type Setting" and all my backed up copies are automatically set to DVD-ROM.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.
