I went to best buy for the verbatim's but wound up going for Sony DVD-R 50 pack. ON Sale for $19.99.

The code up as {SONY08D1}?

I know verbatims are the way to go but I couldn't pass this deal up. even if I wind up with 10 coasters, the price was right .50 cents a disk.

Personally I'd bring them back and exchange them for the Made in Japan +R's. Those are Taiyo Yuden.

2.4 Celeron;512k ram; 80gig HD; 60gig HD; Windows XP(SP1).
Sony DRU-710A (BYX4)
DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter.
TYG02;YUDEN002;MCC blanks.
Favorite Media: Sony 8x+R(MADE IN JAPAN)

Laptop: 1.4 Ghz;256k ram; 40 gig HD;Windows XP

For sony, the better discs are in the 1x-8x speed.Beware of the 1x-4x and 4x speeds.

Sony uses that code on all their taiwanese and japanese dash 1x-8x speed.I've burned 100 of the japanese ones with 0 coasters.
Just look at that label for the brown-football shaped logo for the speed rating 1x-8x. Look to the right of that for the country that made them. The only sony 1x-8x I purchase is the japanese ones stating:FABRIQUE AU JAPAN! The spindles will usually be mixed all together so a little sorting may be needed.

The same goes for the sony +1x-8x. The japanese ones are yuden000-T02 and the taiwanese are SonyD11.

BTW, Staples have the same sony 50 pack spindles on sale for a hair under $20. I will do some sorting of japanese plus spindles for the japanese ones.

You should be fine with the sony dash 1x-8x.Sometimes a burner may not particularly like them, but that holds true with any burner.
Good Luck

Sony 8x DVD+Rs are the best! they are manufactured by YUDEN002 and they have a nice feel to them, too! Taiyo Yuden and Sony.....can't go wrong there! Just bought 100 spindle of Taiyo Yudens, 8x DVD+Rs, at Meritline.com for 41.99! can't wait to get them by the end of the week!

Sony medias are pretty decent enough to do your home back up movies. However, I, on the other hand, prefer the "Sony 8X DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN" over any Sony DVD-R due to the fact that the "MADE IN JAPAN" is Taiyo Yuden. And yes.... TY is the only media that you may want to lay your hands on. Other than that, Verbatim (MCC only)and Maxell are the only 2 top quality medias that I would recommend.

pretty much agree with all the comments above, i too look and prefer the MADE IN JAPAN Sony dvd+Rs~ the sony coding were decent on my burners, but nothing spectacular, i would take the Taiyo Yuden ones ANYDAY over the sony coding personally~ :)

as my sig states, the YUDEN000T02 coding on the Japanese 8x Sony DVD+R are genuine TYs..flawless backups for me using them. good luck :P

you've got some good ones quik4a6. All those sony dash 1x-8x I looked at while I went to my nearby staples were all made in Taiwan. It's only a 2 minute drive for me!

Those plus spindles were all mixed up together,as usual. The japanese ones are still coding as Yuden000-T02!

I bought the DVD-R's before. But after the recommendations of the people on this site I brought them back to exchange them for the DVD+R's that were made in Japan. I couldnt be happier. You are right htey do have a better feel to them then other discs.Take the DVD-R's back to get the DVD+R's that are made in Japan. You will not regret it. I did buy the DVD-R's for compatibility but now I just booktype the DVD+R's and I have no issues playing the movies.

I bought them at best buy, but I broke open the seal.

Do you think they will still let me exchange them?

Which format favors your burner and your stand alone players?

If you are already using the dash format then stick with it.If you have a player having issues with the dash format, then try those plus formats.

That's why I stick with the plus format,95% compatability on the many dvd drives that play my backups that are booktyped to dvd-rom. The dash format is only about 75% from my benqs when playing on those same players,so I won't buy any more dash after this last spindle of sony08D1,made in japan! I've sold quite a few on ebay without a single complaint!I just didn't want to sell the ones I opened up.

Here's what to do if you decide to take them back to best buy:
Save the shrink wrapper, tape it on,and find the receipt.
Now when you take them back, tell them you have an NEC 1100A burner which is plus format only. They should easily exchange them for the plus 1x-8x,even if you burned 1 or 2.

Yeah, Best Buy will take them back. Just make sure you bring your receipt. Their policy is on the back of the receipt as well. They'll exchange within 30 days.

Yes I have to put my two cent in as well. The Sony DVD+R discs made in Japan 1x-8x are excellent, the best I have used, thanks to those who told me about them a few months ago. I haven't had a single "coaster" yet in the few hundred I have used to burn.

I've got one complaint on those sony plus 1x-8x for both japanese and taiwanese spindles. They burn too fast, LOL!

They will successfully burn at 16x in both my benq 1620's with original-older firmwares. But I still keep her at 4x.

Hello creaky!

SonyD11: These are the taiwanese sony +1x-8x. I ran into a 25 pack spindle of these at staples last november and they were ok. 25 for 25. I even burned a couple of them at 16x just to give them a good workout and they performed flawlessly in my sony dvp-ns325. Since finding out the jap ones were yudens,I get them instead-same price.

Both those yuden and D11 sony discs will burn 16x on my original b7-c9 fw.That's why I have to watch the max setting, especially on my single drive backup pc. They will Fly! That's the usual problem, members have their burn speed set to max.

Very decent media, according to my benq 1620.Just like ritek and ricoh. I couldn't tell a difference.

@ creaky

those sony ones i have used only VERY FEW of, but, have in fact used them...the ones i got were made in taiwan, they are DECENT, but not GREAT in all of my various burners...my pioneer didn't like them and my Sony didn't either (ironic isn't it?)..but, my nec LOVED them and my lite-on was neutral (meaning i tried one @4x and one @8x both scanning results proved to be average at best).

Sony DVD+R 4.7GB SONYD11 8x

personally, i would suggest the JAPANESE made ones for the 8x DVD+R sonys as those are the Taiyo Yuden discs in my sig, YUDEN000T02 and they are TERRIFIC. some users have had decent results with these sony coded disks, but, i would not recommend them for compatibility issues that i personally experienced when i tried these.

i suppose im biased since everyone knows i recommend my Taiyo Yudens to anyone who asks, but, i can personally say that the MADE IN JAPAN sony 8x DVD+R are MUCH better discs than these particular MADE IN TAIWAN ones with the sony coding.

that's just MY opinion of them, others might have found more luck using these sonys...

@kivory666 - cool, all opinions are good, good or bad, it's just they've come up in quite a few Nero logs lately, unfortunately a lot of posters never revisit their posts after we do, so stuff like these Sony discs remains a mystery to me without your guys input.

So then what are mine then? SONY08D1

The are the Sony DVD-R's that I mentioned to start the thread, however on the packaging it says they were made in JAPAN.

So they aren't TY's, but they aren't the Taiwanese one's either????

Sony dash media likes to use the same ID code on their media from different countries. These code can be confusing, especially on the sony dash 1x-4x media.I have ran into the folling codes from several different countries:

Sony08D1- Made in both taiwan and Japan
Sony04D1- Made in both taiwan and Austria!

That's why I like the 1x-8x sony media,I haven't found any austrian discs yet in that speed.
