DigitalFAQ has a list on media: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
It shows Ritek as being a 2nd rated disk...... and I just happen to mention it in a forum thread and got jumped on for slanderizing the disk that so many love to use, or haven't had problems with! One of the members told me that the list appearing in DigitalFAQ can't all be correct, or maybe some media manufactures contributed to the site to help put their disks higher on the list. If this is true than where can we go to get a list of ratings on each disk? I thought that the DigitalFAQ list was a great tool to use to judge disks and use accordingly. Does anyone know of another MEDIA RATINGS LIST that we can go by?

I don't know of any other sites that grade or put media into catagories. I have always found that site to be pretty accurate for the most part. Of course there will always be certain medias that perform better or worse with certain dvdrw drives. I do think it is a little behind and needs some updating but generally its ratings or rankings still hold true. I personally feel that the rankings are unbiased and without any outside influence. This of course is only my opinion and I have no facts to back this up.

Word of mouth is probably the best way to judge different medias and how they perform with different burners and set top dvd players and maybe use that site as an initial starting place.

i use it ONLY as a starting point, i highly disagree with some of the ratings on there myself, i've tried so many diff. manufacturers out there in my time of burning dvds and that site definitely needs a tune up. but, for the most part, it's a good guide to get you started, i DEFINITELY do NOT consider it the authority on dvd media...i find that out the hard way, MYSELF...had good discs, have tried the worst crap out there, personal experience SHOULD be the FINAL WORD on media...use what works well for YOU and your particular setup...hehee... :)

i pay no attention to ratings, and use the various media lists as a guideline. stuff like that gets out of date real quick.

also it's odd how different websites see things. For instance cdfreaks seem to love all manner of media, even the appalling CMC, and being mad on media they tweak drives to suit the media (even if it's crap media). but i've been posting on there a little bit and have said how we over here see the problems crap media causes day after endless day, where joe public doesn't want to/shouldn't have to optimise their write strategies to work better with crap media.

so, right now, DigitalFAQ is the ONLY list out there to go by? maybe it's time for them to upgrade their list? I wish AD would put out a list that is more reliable than DigitalFAQ's list!

if someone would pay me, i would personally come up with an accurate list myself :) heck, i've used dozens of different brands, have thousands of burns under my belt...oh well, we can all dream now can't we? lol...but for now, yeah, this is the ONLY website that i have found to have semi-accurate ratings :)

I think that would be a great idea for someoone who has time and wants to make the effort to not only put out guides but also put a QUALTIY list of media and it's manufacturers ID so all can understand what's out there and which one is best! The list that DigitialFAQ puts out is a little misleading cause they talk about fake TYOGx and put certain manufacturers in 2 or more different classes of media! A little ambiguous!

Let me point out that media ratings are meaningless unless they are conducted in a lab under controlled conditions. People who rate the SAME media are burning them at DIFFERENT speeds with DIFFERENT drives and software with DIFFERENT PC specs AND DIFFERENT conditions (yes, some people surf the web while they burn and blame the media). The quality of your burns will vary significantly if you change any of these conditions. As for Ritek being 2nd rated discs - yes, they are. To Taiyo Yuden and Verbatims only in my experience. Their PI/PO tests are not perfect, but they are far from the fair-to-poor results I get from Memorex or Philips or HP. You can check here for opinions and experiences:

I decided to go to the source and ask DigitalFAQ about their list of media and how they come to their conclussions on rating and such!
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
here are some responces that I got by email:

The list is updated every month or two. The current list was updated at the
end of May, but nothing has really changed since then. The media market
doesn't change but a couple times a year. Things are fairly static overall.

People that like to criticize the list are usually upset with the ranking of
poorer media like CMC or RITEK. They judge it off ONLY their own personal
experience with a relatively small number of spindles. That would be an
irresponsible testing method.

The only thing that may be slightly dated is the branding guide. Tracking
which brand is using which ID can change monthly, though most of the "big
ones" stick to the same stock for long periods (Verbatim, Fuji, TDK, Maxell,
etc).

-K

and then I got more emails from K -- whoever that was:

Oh yeah, one more thing... SL only right now.
No extensive DL testing is being done as of yet.
Although the trend seems to = MKM good, RITEK bad.

The others haven't made it to the USA yet,
not in quantity , at least. Ricoh, etc.

-K

then this person sent me more:

I just took a peak at afterdawn, some of the media threads to see what the
trend of that site was. Overall, I see a lot of good advice, TY, MCC, MXL,
etc.

Something bogus I see being repeated is people saying their DVDs died in a
few months or years. That's not really possible. Those people are jumping to
bad conclusions and flying by the seat of their pants, not knowing at all
what the hell they're talking about. The problem they experience is an
inability to fully read back all the data. That is the only factual
assessment they are qualified to make. Then they need to figure out why, and
understand "disappearing data" is the single most unlikely cause. The common
reason for this phenomena is when you use drives and players that are later
in their laser cycle (lasers die really fast, just a few years) and cannot
read the "harder" media (i.e., cheaper media with lower reflectivity and
poorer dyes). Put the disc in a drive with a good laser, bam!, works fine.
Of course, "good laser" is a problem when people buy $30 DVD players and the
cheapest burners/readers they can find. Cheap hardware is equally as bad as
cheap media. The other reason is they never tested it to begin with, just
assuming it was okay when it was burned. And of course, it wasn't. To date,
I've not seen one person with a case of "disappearing data" that could not
be debunked with one of these two "fixes". The only person that ever came
close refused to cooperate further in an analysis (I think he just wanted to
argue anyway). This, of course, only applie to dye media. Phase change dies
really quick, usually from the formation of air bubbles on the surface.
(Used or not!)

-K

and finally:

Forgot my closing thought there. Basically, if somebody has a CD-R or
DVD-R/DVD+R and it's less than 10 years old, and they claim data has
"disappeared", it's 99.9% likely something else at fault.

Those dyes are supposed to be chemically sounds for decades. It's not a
marketing lie either, that's the kind of material that is put in use. Sadly,
pressed metal media CAN rot in as little as 5-10 years if done poorly. This
is common on laserdiscs, the "disc rot" phenomenon. So the cheapest presses
may die before the cheapest dyes. That's one reason "backup" of DVDs should
be a legitimate allowance, and to hell with the DMCA. Your copies may
actually outlive your originals! How's that for some irony?

-K

I will keep a converstation up with this person, whom I presume updates the media guide listing for DigitalFAQ! I think this person knows what he/she is talking about and I'll try to find out how the conclusions are made and what kind of testing they do!

Creaky....... there will be more people not understanding what this person says...... but the list that is posted in DigitalFaQ is an extensive list on disks, their quaility and manufactures...... I wish there is someone or others that are out there that can produce a big study on this and come up with another list like, theirs, that we can make more observations from! this is not to say what this person is doing, good or bad! I think it's an extensive list with much information and I just want to know what kind of testing this person did to come up with 1st class, 2nd class, 3rd class and so on listings of disks.

how does one come up with a list like this one? This person must know what's what! I am going to respond to his/her emails and see what more enlightenment came come back!

Again with the "hot lasers" what is with this? If you want better burns then use better media, and burn slower. Less chance of errors and the burn will be solid. Just my opinion, I would offer two cents but I just ordered some TY's and am broke.

I try saving for my old age but the govt takes all my money. I can see some merit in have a good PSU however your laser is not going to get any hotter, and I cannot believe that some drives put hotter laser in them then others, it is too easy an excuse.

arnie if you are commenting on "K's" comments ...... then it's on def ears cause that person can't explain themselves here. I am contacting K again and try to extract more info about the tests that are run for the DigitalFAQ's media rating list.... which you can find here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

what ever this person can say to us must come from much more testing than what we can do! We can only judge from personal experience.... but this person must be a professional with years of experience under his/her belt! wouldn't you think?

@IHoe

I am just making a general comment, because there was another thread, which I can't remember at this time, that the poster stated you needed "hot lasers" to solve your problems, and that a large PSU would make this happen.
