my friend DVD Shrink is to compress or re-author your movies. you should first use DVD Decrypter to extract the dvd movie into a ISO file, the DVD Shrink to compress, and final DVD Decrypter again to burn. it is IMPORTANT to use DVD Decrypter to extract the movies from the DVD's.

I got this guide for you as well:

If you are not a friend of mine, please read the Disclaimer first at the end of this document.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO COPY A DVD MOVIE TO A DVD-R DISC.

For this example I am going to use the movie Terminator 3

Things you need:
 DVD Burner installed in your computer
 DVD Decrypter Software
 DVD Shrink Software
 Original DVD Movie (make sure you own it)
 Blank DVD-R disc (this is the media i prefer)
 Patience if this is your first time, learn by doing

Before I start, we have to customize some settings of the DVD Decrypter to make things simple in the long run.

Customizing Settings of DVD Decrypter

1. To access the settings go to the Menu and select TOOLS then SETTINGS?
2. A new window will appear with all the settings you can change
3. You will also see numerous tabs at the top
4. Select the GENERAL tab and then look under DEFAULT DESTINATION, this is the place where the ISO file will be after the rip
5. Myself I choose CUSTOM since I have a separate Hard Drive for media files.
6. The rest of the options in GENERAL tab leave the way it is from default.
7. Click OK
8. That?s all the settings I recommend you change in the DVD Decrypter.

Customizing Settings of DVD Shrink

1. To access the settings go to the Menu and select EDIT then PREFERENCES
2. A new window will appear with all the settings you can change
3. Make sure that the (Target DVD size) is the same as the disks you are going to burn into. IF you use regular DVD-R disks then you select DVD-5 but IF you are using DVD-DL then select DVD-9. (In this example we are using the most common DVD-5)
4. And then make sure the field (Run Analysis in Low priority mode to improve multitasking) is SELECTED.
5. Click OK
6. And so far this is all the settings we need to change to DVD Shrink.

In the next page we are proceeding with the fun part step by step. So follow me!

Ok here we go my friends.

PHASE 1 ? RIPPING THE MOVIE OFF THE DVD INTO AN ISO FILE WITH DVD DECRYPTER

1. Open DVD Decrypter
2. Insert DVD Movie into your DVD Burner (In my case Terminator 3)
3. At the Menu select MODE then ISO then READ
4. Wait for DVD Decrypter to recognize the disc
5. You now will see specific information about that DVD Movie including the size (in my case the size reads 7,082,082,304 bytes ? about 7 Gig)
6. Make sure that the SOURCE and the DESTINATION values are correct.
7. NOW Hit the Decrypt Button! ? This will create the ISO file that you will need in the directory that you selected earlier. (In my case it created the file TERMINATOR_3.ISO of 6.59 Gig.
8. When the process is done, close the DVD Decrypter and we are moving to Phase 2 of our little project.

PHASE 2 ? COMPRESSING THE WHOLE DVD OR EXTRACTING THE MAIN MOVIE FROM THE ISO FILE WITH DVD SHRINK

Before you burn you need to compress with DVD Shrink.

Before all let me explain you the difference of COMPRESSING THE WHOLE DVD and EXTRACTING THE MAIN MOVIE. You MUST CHOOSE what kind of back up you want.

COMPRESSING THE WHOLE DVD
With DVD Shrink you can compress an entire Movie with ALL the Special Features, Extras and Menus. Example: you can compress 7 Gig of media into 4.35 Gig, but the problem here is quality. You will some video quality.

OR

EXTRACTING THE MAIN MOVIE
Now if you extract only the Main Movie WITHOUT the Special Features, Extras and Menus. The media you will need to compress will be much smaller and you won?t notice with your human eyes any quality lost. So you must choose which way you will go.
The issue here is Quality versus All Features. You decide.
Here I will explain both of them. Choose the one you will use ONLY one.

COMPRESSING THE WHOLE DVD ? Step by step
1. Open DVD Shrink
2. At the Menu select FILE then OPEN DISC IMAGE
3. Look for the directory in which you created earlier an ISO file with the DVD Decrypter and select that same file
4. At this time the program will start a QUICK ANALYSE of that file.
5. Once is done you will see all sections of the DVD image
6. Now MAKE SURE that you run a DEEP ANALYSIS to this ISO file. You can either press the ANALYSE button at the top or go to FILE then DEEP ANALYSIS. This process may take a while depending on your hardware. Go get some coffee and crackers.
7. When this process is done then hit the button name BACKUP!
8. Set the Select Backup target select: ISO Image File & Set the Select target image file: to the directory where you want to save the COMPRESS ISO FILE. If this file is in the same directory as the original then add a letter to the name so you can remember which is which. In my case DVD Decrypter create an ISO file named TERMINATOR_3.ISO so this time your ISO file created by DVD Shrink is different so I named mine TERMINATOR_3A.ISO this way I know which files are created by each program.
9. Click OK
10. Once the Process is done close DVD Shrink.

OR

EXTRACTING THE MAIN MOVIE - Step by Step

6. Now at the top you will see a button named RE-AUTHOR, Press IT!
7. Now you will see all parts of the DVD ISO file individually.
8. Grab the file under MAIN MOVIE and dragged to the top left area under DVD Structure. This way you will back up the Main Movie only without Extras, Special Features and Menus.
9. Now MAKE SURE that you run a DEEP ANALYSIS to this ISO file. You can either press the ANALYSE button at the top or go to FILE then DEEP ANALYSIS. This process may take a while depending on your hardware. Go get some coffee and crackers.
10. When this process is done then hit the button name BACKUP!
12. Click OK
13. Once the Process is done close DVD Shrink.

PHASE 3 ? BURNING THE NEW ISO FILE CREATED BY DVD SHIRK WITH DVD DECRYPTER

If you notice the ISO file that DVD Shrink created was 4.35Gig Yoo-hoo! Now you can burn it into a DVD-R of 4.7 Gig. Magical!

1. Open DVD Decrypter
2. Insert blank DVD-R into your DVD Burner Drive
3. At the Menu select MODE then ISO then WRITE
4. At the Source please Select the ISO file created by DVD Shrink (4.35 Gig)
5. Hit the WRITE button and that?s it.
6. When the process is done test your DVD Backup in your DVD Player.

And that?s all folks.

Notes:
 All this process is for backups on DVD-R media not DVD+R media.
 I do not recommend DVD+R media for this. Don?t ask why to long to write.
 If you use a DVD-DL (Dual Layer) (DVD-9) disc. You do not have to use DVD Shrink since DL disks have 8.5Gig capacity.
 In this process we used DVD-R (DVD-5) of 4.7 Gig because they are at a reasonable price

What brand of media are you using? What speed are you attempting your burn? I've had lot's of coasters on cheap media that won't accept even a slow burn speed like 4x.
Is your software up to date? Make sure you have the latest version of DVDD installed. 3.5.4.0. was the last I believe. Is your firmware up to date for your drive?
I the original scratched or dirty? Are you using your computer for anything else while burning? Encoding and or burning can use up alot of resources. Switch off any unnecessary programs and try restarting your computer before ripping/burning. Good luck!

I've had nothing but luck with Taiyo Yuden media, AnyDvd, and Shrink.

I'm afraid you're wrong my friend XMel, valve does NOT need DVD Decrypter at all. Valve has got AnyDVD, which in case you don't know XMel, IS a decrypter working as a driver which decrypts protected DVDs 'on-the-fly' so they can be backed up with DVD Software including DVD Shrink and Nero Recode. I have never needed, or intend to use DVD Decrypter, I use AnyDVD with Nero Recode and sometimes DVD Shrink so I know it works.

Just thought this needed correcting as I don't want people believing that 'it is IMPORTANT to use DVD Decrypter to extract the movies from the DVDs' when they already have decryption software such as AnyDVD.

AnyDVD decrypts the DVD
Recoding software software such as Nero Recode, CloneDVD or DVD Shrink compresses the DVD to fit on a standard DVD+R or DVD-R.

I prefer to use DVD+R because it can be book-typed (bitset) to DVD-ROM by most DVD Writers which increases compatibility with 'fussy' DVD Players.

Blank DVD-R disc (please DO NOT use DVD+R discs, they are crap
Does this mean I have to throw out all my Verb and TY +R disks :O

THEN unselect CREATE MDS FILE
What if you have a Fat32 hardrive, you will be screwed if you want to rejoin your files. Plus the MDS is what you open to burn in an iso in Decrypter.

I do not recommend DVD+R media for this.
Some of the best media is +R format.

@valve

If you are getting a CRC error try cleaning your disk, or get another original it sounds like it is scratched, dirty, or imperfect.
