DVDD V 3.540 seems to be chewing through the files without problems now at 55% and kicking.

Previous DVDD version was v3.1xxx which had the error.

DVDshrink still had read problems in initial scan.

Therefore:
Extended solution is:
DVDD v3.540 to HD
DVDShrink 3.1/3.2 to DVD-R

Two phase approach is more time consuming, but is speculated to succeed the task.

DVD Title: Little Black Book
Studio: Sony Pictures
Released by : Columbia Pictures

This is my signature ha ha.

This is Sony's Arcoss protection. This movie caused quite a stir a while back. As you've discovered, the last release of DVD Decrypter can handle pretty much all of them to date. There is also DVD Fab Decrypter which has spawned as a freeware alternative with the demise of DVD Decrypter.
If you don't like doing the two stage approach, look into DVD43 Free or Any DVD. They operate in the background and remove disc and region protections as soon as you put the disc in the drive.

Not very, Shrink doesn't have to spend any time decrypting the files, so the transcoding can proceed faster. Get a movie Shrink can do alone and time it. Then rip the same movie with Decrypter and run the ripped files through shrink. Check back and let us know the time difference.

Luckily, DVD Decrypter was only abandoned recently and is still well up to date on the decryption abilities. As far as being kept up to date on a good basis, AnyDVD would probably be the best, it's retail though and a driver type decryption tool. DVDD was kept up well, but had to be abandoned by Lightning UK for legal reasons. Since AnyDVD plays well with DVD Decrypter, I think I'll just keep Decrypter for ripping and let AnyDVD play a more major role for decrypting when/if Decrypter starts becoming obsolete along those lines.

I'm still new at this as well. I had problems with little black book too. It was getting jammed up in DVD Shrink. What I did was run the movie through DVD Decrypter first, then open the file in DVD Shrink and then burn with DVD Decrypter. I'm not very technical and good at this still, but this actually works. Just thought I'd share the info.

I made a guide specifically for this movie located here: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45467

Well, some people may need explicit directions. Jim must have read some directions or thought of the solution himself. When the Shrink website was up, there was a statement to the effect that it couldn't handle all decryption. In those cases it was suggested the user use DVD Decrypter. Decrypter still handles most encryption systems, though it is no longer being supported. Using a decryption tool like AnyDVD (or any of the good supported decryption tools available) usually ensures Shrink will function the way it's supposed to. Doing guides for individual movies seems to be overkill when one only needs to use the right software.

BTW, the PSL files were for use with DVD Decrypter version 3.5.2.0. Everyone should be using DVD Decryter version 3.5.4.0. With the 3.5.3.0 version, the PSL files you mention were no longer needed.

I stand with brobear on this one. AnyDVD, even though it is a retail program, will handle virtually any of the encryptions. If not today, then tomorrow because it is being updated regularly.

It has certainly been worth the money that I spent on it.

This piqued my interest as I just recently did a backup of Little Black Book.

Of course, no one wants to hear this ......I made a perfect backup with DvdXcopyPlatinumRF/Anydvd. There are 2 versions on the dvd - fullscreen and widescreen. I had problems with the fullscreen, but absolutely none doing in widescreen.

No problem, except you chose the wrong forum. This is after all the Shrink forum. Glad you got your backup. I have nothing against XCopy, when it works. People that it works for like it and those who experienced problems don't. Luckily I belonged to the satisfied user group. I didn't experience the problems a lot of people had; though it wasn't trouble free. I've since moved on to better software. Still have the DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD for decryption though; those work with most of the encoding and transcoding apps, including DVDCopy 4, and DVD-RB/CCE, ... and Shrink of course.

In the case of Little Black Book you're right, the PSL was intended for the Region 2 version. That was with this particular movie and with the older DVD Decrypter versions, it's not needed with later versions of DVD Decrypter. If I remember correctly, there was some bad sector encryption on the Region 1 version as well. With the updated software, it wasn't a problem. However, PSL files have been used for different DVDs to address particular problems while the DVD Decrypter software was being updated. Bad Sector encryption was only a problem for a short while. The later versions of Decrypter didn't need the PSL files. That is unless something has come up I'm not aware of. I don't know everything or keep up with everything. So, if I missed a new movie needing a PSL, let me know. With the AnyDVD, I stopped worrying about PSL files before they were no longer needed with Decrypter. (By no means are DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD the only useful decryption software, there are others; that's for anyone wondering through that doesn't know about decryption software; AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter are just personal favorites).

BTW, glad to see you updated those versions on your guide. One thing I noticed conspicuously missing from your mini guide was the use of the "Quality Settings". They were specifically added to DVD Shrink version 3.2.0.15 to address problems with compression. That info can be checked out here on the Shrink forum, I'm sure it has been covered. If you can't find it, just ask. Those familiar with the different aspects of DVD Shrink know that it can be run without "quality settings" for DVDs not causing compression problems and with "quality settings" in use for those that do. Less editing or no editing is needed when using the "quality settings".

Your guide for doing the movie gravitated more to compression issues and editing as opposed to the use of DVD Decrypter with encryption problems. A person needs to read a comprehensive guide on DVD Decrypter if they're going to use it. For editing, File mode is handy, but ISO can be used as well. If one is going to burn with Decrypter, the Shrink output needs to be in ISO.

Most good guides on Shrink cover editing. Just an item of info, with the last version of Shrink, it is possible to edit without going into Re-Author. Using Still Image in the compression settings (not Still Picture), the user can edit under Full Disc and retain functional menus. Some of the guides don't have that option explained, but it has been mentioned here on AD on numerous occasions. I know I've mentioned it a few times before this.
