i've noticed that people seem to like media made in Japan, why is that and which company's media are made in japan except for TY's?

Other than TYs, I only know of some Verbatim DVD+RWs that are made in Japan (MID code MKM, their parent company). Everyone else has moved their manufacturing to Taiwan because real estate is cheaper. Perception is that quality control is better in Japan than Taiwan. Taiyo Yuden and some Verbatim lines - the 2 best media out there - are made in Japan so it fuels this perception than Japanese media is better than Taiwanese media.

I use that Made In Japan wording on local on-sale media. Some of the taiwanese media is very good-verbatim/ritek/ricoh,sony-but why buy ritek when the same identical spool that says made in japan are ty for the same price?

Maxell -4x is a good example. The japanese ones are ty and hitachi while the taiwanese are riteks and reports of cmags once in a while.

Maxell +8x: Hitachi on japanese ones and Ritek-r03's on the other.

TDK + format is mostly cmags and the dash are mostly tys.

Sony +1x-8x yudens on japanese and sony 08d1 on taiwanese.

Sony -1x-8x: Same Sony08D1 ID code on both taiwanese and japanese spindles.

Quality isn't a lot different when you look at the ty and riteks, and the sony 1x-8x,but when you are looking at tdks-Huge quality difference between the japanese and taiwanese and the price will be the same.

I prefer the made in japan labeling on those brands. It just makes me feel comfortable on knowing they are some of the best media out there along with verbatim data life plus.

Another thing,is other countries like india/china/and Austria that I can comment on. Many of the media manufacturers are very poor.Best to avoid them. Sony in the slower dash speeds of 1x-4x and 4x is notorious for using the same MID code on them: Sony04D1 on both taiwanese and the crappy Austrian ones.

MID code MKM
I just got some verbatim 2.4x+DL with the MID code of MKM-001-000 from Mitsubishi Kagaku Media facility in Singapore. They seem pretty good so far. Singapore verbs have been getting some very good reviews by fellow AD members.

I haven't run into any of the japanese verbatims-probably all gone-but the data life plus of verbatim are sweet .

my japanese versions carried a MAXELL ID and weren't worth a fluck.....

And be wary of budget media carrying TY ID codes. Ask bbmayo about that one or read for yourself here...

I personally stick with branded discs from reputable manufacturers and don't care if it's made in japan or the north pole. Quality disc manufacturers strive to put out quality products. Verbatim learned the hard way when they tried to cut costs and used CMC as a supplier. The negative feedback they recieved was more than enough to put an end to it.

Honestly, I would prefer and only buy the TY, MAXELL, FUJI & SONY (also TYs) "MADE IN JAPAN" over any other places that manufactured them regardless. I would continue to buy any "MIJ" medias as long as they're available. All of my TYs (including Fuji & Sony) and Maxell backed up are standing strong and yes... they're sharp and flawless.

Maxell-002-00 in my brand new HP 640C: 1 coaster in middle of burn out of 1 used!

Maxell-002-00 in my Benq 1620 with over 1000+ burns: 150+ of 150+ successful, even on the fly!50 more ready to be burned.

That HP is no longer in service!

Different burners, different preferences on the media they like!

My maxell are being burned by a new liteon 1693S. Three firmware versions(factory,ugrade1,upgrade2) and it still doesn't like them. The disc are rated 1-8x and it only reads them at 6&8x. 8X burns all finished but were unplayable in the any of my players. 6x burns turned out ok....
