I am puzzled. I can burn on cheap TDK and Memorex with the success rate of 95-98
% . However; with Ritek Ridata silver top, Media Type: R01 and TY, T02 white matte top (bought at Blankmedia.ca) I am producing 100% coasters.
I am working with the same set up: ATAPI DVD DD 2x16x4x16. Using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0, DVDShrink 32 & Nero 6.6.0.8. I always burn on 4x even though the DVD Discs are 8x or more.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks Vanillla Newbie

Your burner is a re-badged benq 1620.This is the second one I posted to this week. I've got 2 and the only trouble I had was on verbatim -4x digital movie quality. That's the only coaster this year.

Not familiar with that site. Usually ty's are recommended from supermediastore.com/meritline.com/and rima.com
You may have gotten fakes.

On these socalled coasters, are they failing before or during the actual burn phase or are they failing when you try to play them on your stand alone/s?

I don't know if I am gonna get flamed for this.. but I bought some memorex 8x DVD-R's from Walmart when the 25packs were on sale and they have been the best. Not one bad burn after 200-300. They ID as RitekG05' tho. Are yours the colored ones? What do they id as in dvdinfopro?

Thanks Suagmon,
I could burn but then they fail to play on my stand-alone. Do you mean that the root of my problem is my highly-recommended-BenQ Burner? and I would not be able to burn on certain (high quality)brands?
The site I use is a Canadian one may be this is the reason why it is not as well-known.

@magnetik

why would u get flamed when you are actually USING Ritek G05s?, those are my 3rd fav. media out there...i guess most people on here, myself included, regard memorex in a VERY low/bad way, but, since your memorex are just simply rebranded RitekG05s, you got the "good ones" :)

whenever i put down Memorex it's only in reference to the CMC MAG produced ones with the CMC MAG coding, i have had equally good success as you have with the RitekG05 coding..mine just happen to be actual Ritek/Ridata branded ones, but, they are the SAME manufacturer as your memorex branded ones :)

regarding vanillla's question...i have heard that blankmedia.ca is a VERY reliable vendor in Canada, but, since i live in U.S., i've never purchased from them before, so i wouldn't know; at least with the Taiyo Yudens, assuming you got AUTHENTIC ones, do you mean TYG02? is it a 8x DVD-R disc? the reason im making sure is a LOT of people have media ID codes confused...

example: TTG01, TTG02, TTH01, TTH02 are NOT Taiyo Yuden discs...these codes are found mainly with TDK and the occasional Memorex and Bulkpaq discs, NOT quality Taiyo Yudens.

Genuine Taiyo Yuden discs, and the other companies that FAKE the Taiyo Yuden coding reads as follows: TYG01, TYG02, TYG03, YUDEN000T02 (4x,8x,16 DVD-R media and 8x DVD+R coding respectively)

the difference of 1 letter "T" vs "Y" makes a BIG difference. :)

i never used or owned a benq burner before, so, saugmon would have MUCH MORE experience with the compatibility issues regarding media using that burner, but, i wanted to at least clarify the media ID coding on said discs.

i have used RitekG05s with great success, but, never tried the R01s before, so no comment there...is firmware up to date? i'll let saugmon get back to this as i am not familiar with your burner...good luck you guys.

Hi Magnetik,
My TY's ID: DVD+R: Yuden000-T02-000
My Ritek Ridata's ID: DVD+R:RicohJPN-R01-002
For obvious reason even though my success-rate is high in cases of burning on Memorex and TDK I would like to be able using higher quality media.
Thanks Vanilla Newbie

I may cause a ruckus, but here goes: Vanilla, TY's LOVE to be burned at 8X... You got the good stuff (if you have authentic TY's), they'll perform as rated! No need to throttle back the TY's.

My benqs love those yuden000-T02's and also the ricohs. I can't complain about any of those manufacturers.cmags are ok also, but if I get a batch of them,I do burn them at 2.4x.

You said your issues happen on the stand alone player.

Does this player give you a "No Disc Inserted" type of error?

What are those tdk's and memorex ID codes? They wouldn't happen to be dash format would they?

The benq 1620 is a dual format/dual layer/and it also has the bitsetting capability to booktype dvd plus media to dvd-rom.DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink have a setting to enable this booktyping feature, only on plus format media!
This booktyping makes the plus format and turns it into dvd-rom making them more compatable on stand alone players and pc drives.

Go into DVD Shrink,Do the main movie in reauthor or do entire disc.
After you click backup tab, You are then on the backup options page. On the furthest right tab you have burn options-click on it.There's 2 boxes on the lower left side, click the box that says booktype to dvd-rom.The lower box is burn at least 30 mms-compatability mode dvd+r/+rw.Make sure both boxes are ticked and all your settings are ok and then you can click the ok tab to start your next backup copy.

I'm not sure how you backup, but here's the Mode Iso Write way.

Go into DVD Decrypter-There may be an easier way,but I do it like this: Click on mode, iso write :

Look at the small folder icon that is right of the burnspeed setting/on bottom/right side of screen.Click on the folder.

It'll open up to different burner brand names, click on benq.
Look for "Change for" and scroll till you get to dvd + media.
Click on "New Setting" and scroll to dvd-rom.
Click on change tab
OK

That booktyping feature is extremely helpful on making my backups play on many different drives, where as the dash format can't even come close to the compatability when it comes to my benq's.

What is your make and model number on your standalone player? sounds like your standalone doesn't like the TY's. Have you tried the burn TY's on a friend/relative's standalone...or on your PC or on a PS2 after burning? May be time for a new DVD player that handles all formats (+R,-R). Also bitsetting may help (DVD-ROM) with the compatibility. My GE 1401 standalone refuses to play Verbatim MCC003's +R, but absolutely loves the YUDEN002's.

Hi Saugmon,
First of all I thank you for the detailed description on what to do and how.
No, what I?ve got it is not the: No disk error type. DVD player tries playing them but does not have a clue what.
My Memorex was Silver top: DVD+R, CMC MAG-E01-000
TDK was matte top: DVD+R CMC MAG-E01-000
No mistake, I double checked both of them are the same make and type.
I changed settings according to you in DVD Shrink then in DVD Decrypt I clicked on BenQ. I had DVD+RW and I changed it to DVD+R, my New Setting was already DVD-ROM.
Then I burnt a disc with new settings and it does not play on my stubborn player. (JVC XV-521)
Thanks

I think you are right and the problem is my DVD player. Interestingly, I tired on my son's player and got the same result.
TY and Ridata plays on my travelling DVD player.

That is a dilemma: Your player will play cmags but kicks out the good stuff like yudens and pretty decent ricohs! Your traveling dvd player will play them?usually they are even pickier at playing backups. But anything can happen in dvd backups.

This would lead to maybe a bad batch of yudens and Ricohs? I don't know what the odds of that of happening on 2 different brand names.

On the Yuden-T02s, Look on the purple side of the disc. There will be some letters and numbers near the inner hub of the dye.Mine say TG001159. See if yours has a similar code. You may need a bright light.

When I first started backing up pc dvd's, My first purchase was off of ebay for verbatim data life/or media life +4x. They had 3-30 pack spindles and they were identical-visually.
2 of those spindles were mcc-002 and 1 spindle was Ricohjpn-01. My stepson's ps2 wouldn't play those ricohs-no disc-error,but he had no trouble with the mcc-002's.

You may also want to dabble with the dash format and see how those players react to dash backups if you haven't tried that format yet.

If worst comes to worst, a new $35 wal-mart special dvd player usually plays everything. That's a last resort.

If you do go the new player route make sure to bring one of each kind of disc to test out. That way you'll be sure they all will work.

Yep, I'm going to have go the route of finding a new-Reliable- stand alone player. My sony has been acting up lately and now I'm into the dual layer media,it really screws up after the layer break.

Just 1 problem though, The few DL discs I have burned are of the adult oriented 3 and a half hour+ ones with all the bonus goodies, LOL

I don't think I can take those backups to my local walmart to test on their players, LOL

I've got a brother and a cousin who bought the $35 magnavox. I'll take those dl's over there to test out before I buy 1 at walmart.

Hi guys,

Just curious saugmon, how did you know vanillla had a rebadged benq? Must have been helping on another thread huh. Anyway if it is a rebadged benq I suggest trying the benq booktype management app. You can download it here. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=138436

Then load a burned disc in dvd identifier to verify that booktype was changed to dvd-rom. I've had better results useing the official booktype utility for each brand as opposed to useing other burning apps to do it like dvdd or nero. Just my 2 cents and personal experiences.

Mort

Edit: Vanillla, what make and model dvdrw do you have and is the firmware current?

Hey mort81, I just googled: ATAPI DVD DD 2x16x4x16 and it kept bringing me to cdfreaks.com and noticed they were saying they were benq 1620s. I can't recall that other thread, but they had the phillips DVD-RW that had the same Atapi dvd dd 2x16x4x16 and also the same identical issue with cheaper media playing but better media wouldn't. At first I thought is was another crappy phillips in a dell -that usually has many problems. After googling and finding out they were benqs, that changed how the way I looked at the issues.

Everyone has their definition of coaster, I consider it any burn errors. Most consider coasters as ones that won't play in a certain burner.

My Motto: Let the burner drive play it's own backup before we consider it a coaster.

Vanilla: I also am looking for another stand alone player. My usually reliable sony dvp-ns325 is starting to let me down.Best to take your backups to a store and test it in them before you buy.Usually the cheapies will play everything.

Also on your firmware version, that one you posted sounds more like a driver. Both my benqs are B7-C9 and B7-L9. I believe the latest fw is B7-V9,but I have no issues so i'll keep it this way until I do. That latest version stated it was for verbatim +DL MKM media. My old B7-C9 fw had no trouble on them dl's-go figure?

Also on the benq's, there are 2 different fw's: 1 for bulk and 1 for Pro. I believe yours is the pro,but not 100%. Mine are bulk. You'll notice if your firmware starts with a G7-pro, instead of a B7-bulk.

Yes it is DVD+-R/RW DL Recorder, Firmware: G7H9. Does it mean in this case that the pro is inferior to bulk?

Here is a direct link to the benq booktype management utility. I hate to post it cause it causes the thread to become to wide to view normally.

The only difference between the bulk and pro is the f/w with the pro supposedly? better.

saugmon,

The only reason I questioned you at all is because ATAPI stands for AT Attachment Packet Interface and can apply to any make of writer. Since vanillla does show to have G7H9 f/w the dvdrw should show as being a qenuine benq DW1620 pro instead of a rebadged benq in device manager under DVD/CD ROM DRIVES and I see no evidence of this.

I don't doubt you buddy but it would be nice if there was some concrete information about exactly what drive vanillla has ya know.

I've got an I/O magic 16x and my device manager and all my programs state it is a benq 1620 bulk.

The second I/O magic 16x writer I got was a generic- 16x-Ide-dvdrw according to device manager. That one totally sucked even with it's own book-typing program!
