Should I install the Windows service packs 1 and 2? Would that help my dvd backup process?

What problems are you having? What exactly are you doing? Are you having problems copying a certain movie? What software are you using? What are your system specs? With some more details I'm sure some one here can help.

Windows should be kept updated as much as possible. Using Windows Update is the way to take care of it. You get your latest updates for DirectX and other useful items for Windows. Some affect the handling of video files. As for SP1 and SP2, definitely the SP1 and maybe for the SP2. Though by now, I suspect there isn't a lot of choice if you're going to keep your system up to date. When SP2 first came out, it was a problem for people having a lot of codecs loaded on their system. Loading SP2 was better accomplished on new machines and on clean installs of the OS. For a while, there was an SP2 blocker available to delay having to update to SP2. Hopefully, by now, Microsoft has the problem more under control and adding SP2 isn't as much of a problem. I've had SP2 on my system for some time and it hasn't caused any problems. However, I did it with a clean format. Maybe Longhorn will be along soon and we'll get a better OS. But, they'll probably go through the service packs with it as well.

On my last pc,before she fried,I would not update it to sp2 because of quite a few members having problems with it. I also have sp1 on my backup machine and why update when it is running perfectly! That pc is rarely on the web,so a firewall is not important for me that comes with sp2.Plus I'm on dial-up and it'll take me forever to update that pc, LOL

My new HP came with sp2 and when I loaded my oem version of Nero 6.0.0.21b onto it,I'd get a warning banner when I'd make a disc to disc copy. It said something like this: Problem with my version of Nero may not compatable with this version of windows-Please visit the Nero site for an update for fix.
It popped every time,so I just ignored it and ticked the box to not pop up again. No problem burning on the fly though.

I'm not using sp2 firewall on my main pc,for now.

Even with SP2 I use the option for my own firewall. Updates are more than just the service packs. However, when updating, portions of the service pack are added. A lot of the newer software requires later versions of DirectX, so I imagine you at least get that depending on the need. Properly installed, SP2 is a non-issue. As mentioned earlier, it was mostly a problem during early release on systems already loaded and with this forum most were loaded with recording codecs. If it's not there, then it will need to be. The exceptions are PCs that don't go on the net. However, they can get into difficulty by not being updated. Also, if they go online without security, it only takes one malicious site to cause problems. As for the Nero warning, they took care of that a long time ago. An update of the app will take care of it. With a dial up connection, that is time consuming.

Saugmon... if your version of Nero is that old, you may want to update it. They've made some noticable improvements.

As far as service packs helping DVD backups, only in an indirect manner. Since it is security oriented, the service packs help prevent spyware and adware buildup on a PC that is picked up from the net. Since a buildup of spyware and adware affects the resources of a PC, it affects the ability to record. So, keeping the PC clean, which the service packs are intended for, will help keep the PC doing backups more efficiently.

Not everyone has the luxury of multiple PCs where one can stay off the internet. Another fact of life is that newer PCs come with SP2 already loaded and the updates as mentioned include portions of SP2. So, it's getting time to grin and bear it because Microsoft isn't giving alternatives. The options are to have a PC off the net with an old OS or outdated and asking for trouble.

Hello Brobear, I'll probably be investing in Nero recode2 here shortly in the future.

I tried the updates, even leaving off the incd packet and it really screwed me up.So I used the Nero cleantool and reloaded this version and all went back to norm. This oem version of Nero is performing flawlessly, even on sp2, so I'd hate to change it until I get recode 2. Even my disc to disc copy if 5 mins quicker than My Sonic's disc to disc feature.

Later Bro!

On occasion Nero doesn't get it right with their updates, but they usually correct problems in short order. I have the full version of Nero and I didn't get InCD in the last download. Also, everything is working flawlessly with this release. There's been changes in more than Recode. Take a look at the Nerovision. The full version of Nero is better than the OEM versions. They may still be giving discounts for updating from the OEM versions. However, one can usually get Nero cheaper from suppliers other than the Nero site.

I can't agree more with brobear,

Update Windows when the patches/updates are released. By ensuring your system is updated properly you improve your privacy on the web, avoid bad downloads, reduce popups (GOOGLE TOOLBAR is great for that as well), ease wireless setups, more control given to you over your security settings, and the list goes on.

Just make sure you back up you computer prior to installing Service Pack 2. If you can't back up everything at least hit the critical files of your system.
