this is prolly a stupid question but what r the usb plug ins in the front of ur ps2 for?? thanks!!

I use my USB key which I insert into on of the USB ports in order to update my AR Max codes (which I save on my USB key).

The USB ports are officially for connecting various peripherals, such as the USB Eyetoy and USB Headset (used in some online games).

ikkaro: you can use any kind of usb flash drive (mp3 player or not) as long as it is a usb mass storage device (if you plug it into a computer, it will show as a mounted drive).
