I bought nextech dvds for bout 8.00 for 25 at circuit city. Now cmc makes them according to dvd identifier. Now I go back and get phillips, which I hear are good on this forumn. I check with dvd identifier and lo and behold I pd 3 dollars more for cmc.
Who told you phillips branded media is always good? Its actually usually not anymore. Media that is actually made by phillips IMO is pretty good. One example is sony dvd+rw's media code phillips 041. Phillips like memorex and HP by their media from the lowest bidder usually and you never know what you're going to get from batch to batch. Cmc mags are everywhere. Stay with good media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, and sony. Sony might not be the same manufacturer everytime but it will usually still be good.
Well the "big boys" IMO are verbatum and taiyo yuden. Although I have heard rumors where some 16x verbatum dvd-r's are being made by cmag, I haven't seen any since I only use +r's. You will be safe with TY's as long as you buy from a reputable store. There are some TY fakes out there.
I guess phillips used to be pretty good, but now they mainly use cmags.I ran into them on a spindle of Phillips +2.4x.They burn ok in my benqs, but I still don't trust them.
Here's some brand names that use cmags:
Hp
Memorex
TDK plus format
Maxell-Dash-Small 3 or 5 jewel packs,made in taiwan
Teon
Checkout dogbomb's "Fine List of Media Codes" thread at the top of this DVD-R media forum. Very interesting seeing as how many brand names use cmagnetics corp.
Notice those tdks,Majority of their plus format are cmags, while the dash format is ty's! Quite a bit of quality difference when you find both formats on sale for the same price.
