I see coments all the time about "memosux" media, but I've NEVER had a problem with it. I have crapy $30 dvd players in my house, and my backups play in them. I use all kinds of media (usually whatever is on sale). I've never had problems with any kind. I do have a relly good sony 16x DL burner. Could that be why I never had a problem? As long as burn @ 4x they all work great. No offense to the 99% you guys all kick a** here. I used to go to the dvd decrypter forum all the time (obviously now closed) I'm glad I came over to here. lol

A few q's to try and steer you in the right direction....
What do your memorex code out as? CMC MAG or RITEK? How long have you been burning? How many burns so far? Have you done PIE/PIF scans?

I have the Sony 16x DRU-710A is that what you are using?

Just because they "work" doesn't mean they will last. And besides and 99% of people be wrong! LOL.

Yup, I got the DRU 710A also. I've been burnig for about a year and I've gone through several 50 packs of discs(250 burns at least). Since I never had a problem with any brands I never tried finding the disc ID. How do you check? I've seen posts how to, but again I never really needed to use it. But now I'm courios to find out what the deal is. I'm always looking to learn.

I'm not b.s. ing either. I've backed up tons of dvd's for friends to. I only had 1 who said it would't play, but her dvd was so old she had problems playing regular discs. She got a new one and it played them fine. I know I'm going of topic a little, but should I save my maxell's for backing-up ps2 games? I ordering my swap magic discs very soon.

Here's something to try if you have Nero. Use the Nero Tool: Disc Quality Test. Set the speed at 4x (which is your burn speed) and check the PI/PO's. This shows the quality of the discs. I have used a couple of 25 pks of CMC and they scan crappy. My memorex (RitekG03's) are subpar as well. Taiyo Yuden's(SONY MIJ+R's) scan out awesome!!! Usually under 100 PIF's on a burn with a 1 or 2 max. Another q for you...how much do you usually pay for a Memorex 50pk spindle? You can get top notch TY's at Best Buy or Staples on sale $19.95/50 pack. Why settle for less! This saves headaches down the road. Pick some up and compare Disc Quality Test of TY vs CMC or even RITEK and you won't go back to Memorex....
There are plenty of places where I'd like to be in the 1% of....junk media is not one of them!

I think more people should be encouraged to use Memorex discs, that would leave more of the TYs, Verbs, etc., for the rest of us.

LOL bilbo :)

i guess there is a "compromise" for those that suffer and the rest of us live the "good life" hehe

im definitely in the 99% that despise Memorex CMC MAG produced discs, i don't recommend them to anyone only because i don't want them to waste their hard earned money on crap... it's all about "perspective" i guess...burn and learn. :)

To: all newbies,

Please buy cheap medias, unknown brands and Memorex only if you can because they're super cheap and so you can get more coasters. Don't worry if you get more coasters, just run down to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, ect. and get yourself some more cheap Memorex to do your back up. It's ok, it's easy and it's cheap alright.

{{{Here's an example:}}}

25 packs of TY, Maxell or FUJI "MIJ" cost $13.99 - $14.99 (free of coasters when backed up, and it's playable more than 2 - 5 years down the road and if you take really good care of it i.e. no scratches whatsoever, it might just live as long as 5 - 10 years).

25 packs of Memorex or unknown brand cost $9.99 - $13.99 (5 - 6 or more coasters when doing back up, and after 3 - 5 months it will freeze and will not play on your stand alone dvd player).

Now you do the MATH...!!!

Alos when bought on sale the TY's cost about the same as the junk...$9.99 for 25/pk and $19.99 for 50/packs. Why compromise!!!

I'm new at this and I can tell the difference.

I had bought TDK's DVD-R's, good stuff. And TDK's DVD+R's...cmc mag crap. I figured they would all be the same since they were TDK branded, but I was wrong.

without even knowing, I was getting problems burning to the +R's. I would have to burn 3 attempts at one disk to get a successfull, I didn't have any problems with the -R's.

I was starting to think that I would never buy the +R's anymore, but then I came here and learned a bit from these guys.....

They are correct.

correct-a-mundo~ :) be weary of the TDKs, some are good, like the DVD-R TYG02s made in japan, while the others are as you mentioned..the CMC MAG crap. just be careful and at least NOW you know, experience brings good things, just be patient. :)

i was getting scared there for a second, thought alkohol had fallen off his rocker, then i scrolled down some more, i was sweatin there..

sometimes you can find good sales, i had mentioned earlier in another thread, today , i was at best buy and found an open box of the 25 pack verbs AZO labeled, 16x DVD+R for 9.99, compared to the regular 19.99 tag...........it was a deal, so i snatched em up.
and they do have the Sony 50 pack of both dash and plus for 19.99 this week......... FYI

@gear79,

I'm tired of telling newbies to "stay away" and to "stop" buying shitmorex simply because of (a) it's their money (b) they won't listen and regardless they'll definitely end up buying that cheap CMC coasters (c) more likely half of them have never heard of "Yuden" and "Verbs" before. In addition, 50% - 60% of newbies are going to buy shitmorex or any unknown brands regardless of what we told them.

And so now, let them do the MATH alone.

Well you hit the jackpot with this comment.
Yes you might pay a little more (NOT DOUBLE) for the best media out there, so why keep using elto cheapo stuff ?

I was a newby once, now I know what to purchase !

i totally agree alkohol, i am not biased toward any one brand, i simply use what works for me, and if i find me a deal, (on trusted media) i get it. i have mainly been using the fuji's plus format and verbs, got me an open box of 16X verbs at b/b for 10 bones..
i too was once a newbie, as we all were......... but i 100% agree, you try and lead by example, as well as experience.......... but to no avail, they will take your advice with a grain of salt, and still do what they want. and like it had been said numerous times....it's their money

Well I'll say this. From now on I won't buy the shitty memosux anymore. 99% is a large majority. I just wondered why I don't have any difficulty using them (except when I first started and burned to fast). Does a good burner, processor, etc. help? I checked some of my old backups, they all play ok. But again I've learned a lot from here so I WILL head the warnig and thanks to all you guys.
