I bought a 100 pack of Officemax brand dvd+r's the other day, on sale for $29.99. I had thought it was a good deal, plus the clerk told me when I asked that this media is just as good as the name brand's.
Well I'm having loads of trouble with it, already wasted about 10 disks that ended up as coasters. It seems it cannot be burned at 2x, and when I burn dvd's at 4x or 8x with it my dvd player either takes 5 minutes to load the video, or won't read it at all. Using Nero 6 to do all my burning.

I had been using Phillips dvd+r's with no problems at all. Anyone else try this Officemax brand? Has it been working good for you or are you having problems like mine?

I also tried burning the same dvd with an Officemax dvd and a Phillips dvd. The Officemax dvd loaded after several minutes, but the video kept stuttering at random points. The Phillips loaded right up and played perfectly with no problems, so it wasn't a problem with the dvd image.

Now I'm thinking I wasted $30 that I really can't afford to waste. No money left to go get replacement Phillips disks. :(

Also a quick note on returns at Officemax. A while ago, still when I had my old pc back at the beginning of the year, I had bought Maxell cd-r's on sale at Officemax. Well my cd-burner at the time wouldn't even acknowladge that one of the Maxell cd's was in the drive, so they were useless to me. I took them back, packaging and all, with receipt, to Officemax and they wouldn't return them. Luckily the checkout area was busy and I asked for the manager. He also refused to return them untill I started to make a fuss in front of the other customers. Then he let me exchange them for another brand.
Officemax apparently hates to let people make returns on items that are unusable, so I really hesitant to try and return these.

Quick Update...I guess I was wrong about all my disks being dvd+r's. Apparently they are all dvd-r's, both the Officemax and Phillips disks.

run a media ID check on those discs and let us know what the media ID is, my guess it's not very good or CMC MAG if you are REALLY unlucky~ i think THAT would be the reason why you are having such a hard time with them...

www.dvdinfopro.com for the program to get the media ID coding. :)

Fuji film dash media should be pretty good.

How do those backups look on your pc,using the drive that burned them. Also try those fuji ID coded backups in other players to verify their results if possible.

It just might be the compatability on that player doesn't like the dash format, since plus media was ok in it.

Someone else I am helping out has a similar issue: They can't play tys but they can play cmags.Turns out it is probably their player.

Phillips uses a lot of cmags in their media. Can you run them through for the MID code?

Do you mean how do they play on the PC? Don't know as I never use the PC for watching dvd's. I always either burn to VCD or now dvd to play them my APEX AD-1200 player. Doesn't really matter if they'll play on the PC since it's never used for that. (The pc is in a different room than where we watch tv, so it's not really possible to watch video's in here).

We have two dvd players in the house, both APEX AD-1200's. Both play the Phillips fine, and both are having problems with these Officemax disks.

I've got one blank Phillips left, so here's the info for that disk...

I had thought I was getting a good deal, since all the local stores have dvd-r's on sale this seek, and they are almost all $19.99 for 50. I thought getting 100for $29.99 would be a better deal. I'd have been better off getting the braqnd I know instead of being stuck with these disks that I can't really use. Live and learn I suppose.

I saw the officemax dvd-r's on sale today and they were Moser Baer.

There were made in India.

As for Imations, the 4 25packs that I got at officemax were MCC's.
They are 4x DVD-R's at six bucks a piece on clearance. AZO Dye.

How do you tell the maker of the dvd-r's is before you buy them? Like how would I tell which company made the Officemax ones before buying them?

ASking cuz of this..."I saw the officemax dvd-r's on sale today and they were Moser Baer.

Ok...

The OfficeMax I know are Moser Baer because right on the pack it states made in india. That's were Moser Baer is located. Also, because I've read on countless forums that if you are going to buy OfficeMax Brand then look for the made in india as these are MBI's.

As for the Imations, I didn't know that they were MCC's. I bought them because of the price. I knew they could be CMC Mags, but since many people like CMC's nowadays I took a chance. Also, my recorder loves all types of media. My friend who has a burner (i use a set top recorder) checked and these are MCC's.

(Remember MCC's are made in Taiwan at the CMC plant so sometimes you get lucky)

I use windvd6 gold for viewing my backups.Power dvd is another fine program. You can also use media playey. When you run into playback issues, Check them by viewing them on your pc playing program using the DVD-RW drive that burned them. You don't have to watch the entire movie. Just chapter skip,ff,rev, ending, and check the area where you are having issues from your stand alone player. In your case, make sure you don't get a no disc inserted error. But definitely those apex players don't like that office depot media for some reason.

These must look great with no issues on your pc.

Since your Quick update, which I missed before, Can you try a batch of the plus format and see how they perform on those stand alone/s.Majority of mine prefer the booktyped plus media and the dash has a little harder time playing-same no disc inserted errors. My apex 1100a did prefer the plus format over the dash.

Made in Latin America wtf:
That's a new one on me. Super walmart is only 200 yards from my apt,so I'll investigate their maxells. They're usually the hitachi or the riteks.I've heard they are using cmags,so anything is possible!

I also saw the Maxell's from Latin America at Walmart. I believe made in Mexico.

I think that these must be CMC Mags.
