I have a question that might be very simple for a lot of you out there, however I'm pretty new to this burning thing. My question is how come when I try to set the burn speed on my DVD shrink, the only options I'm given are 16x and maximum? Whatever happened to 4x and 8x? I bought some 16x verbatim discs from Sams Club and it doesn't work well on any DVD player when I burn at max speed(which is 12x). So I'm gonna try 4 and 8x to see which works better on the discs. But I could never set it to burn and 4 or 8. Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Hello
It might possibly be a firmware issue. In case you don't know, firmware is basically a set of instructions telling your drive how to handle various discs. Your drive may not know how to write to these new discs. Check with your drive manufacturer's website to see if there is a newer firmware version available for your drive. How do you know if it's old or new? Try DVD Identifier. It should list your drive and the firmware version in brackets like this: (my drive)
[L:]LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW 1693S [FW KS09]
FW=firmware, so my firmware is KS09. And as I said, check the website for your drive and see if there's something newer. Bigger numbers indicate newer versions. For example, my old firmware was KS04. The newest is KSO9. Your drive's manufacturer won't use the same letter or number combos, but it should be similar enough for you to figure out.
Check back if this doesn't sort things out.

Hey thanks for replying to me, I tried DVD identifer but it said that it couldn't get any information from the manufacturer. Is there any other way to find out?

As it just so happens, I just stumbled on a method a couple of minutes ago.
Open up DVD Decrypter. Under source, make sure your burner is listed in the window. Click Tools>Drive>Check For Firmware Updates
Even if the connection to rpc1.org times out, Decrypter will tell you your current version. Write it down, memorize it, or whatever, and check your drive's website for a newer version.

My DVD Writer is from TSTT CORP it came with the computer. I've been trying to look them up but nada. I even went to google. Is this a really old DVD burner or am I not looking in the right place? I'm sorry I'm kinda computer illiterate.

On your desktop or start menu, find My Computer. Then look for the letter designation of your burner e.g. D: or E:...C: is usually your harddrive. Anyway, righ-click on it and then click properties. Click the hardware tab and it will show you the proper description of your drive and you can google using that.

TSST stands for Toshiba Samsung Storage Technologies. Your drive might be labeled as a Toshiba or a Samsung. The method zippyd told you about will list your current f/w and should allow you to check for any updated versions.

I believe it is listed as a samsung. The website I usually use to check for firmware updates is down for a few days but I did find this. http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Samsung/Samsung-TS-H552... Looks like the most current f/w for your drive is MO00.

You're right it is listed as a Samsung. Finally found that out, however the model is a TS-H552B not a TS-H552C. Or is that just an upgrade over the 552B?

I don't know, I'm not familiar with samsungs. Did you try the method zippyd suggested?

Edit: I think the website it uses is down for a few days. If it won't tell you the current f/w vs wait a couple days and try again. BTW do you have the blank dvd in the burner when you are trying to set burn speeds?

Yeah I tried both of his methods and they both say that my current firmware version is GA02. So I assume the updated version would be GA03 and up right? Cause earlier I download a firmware however it said TS 10. I still haven't been able to find a GA anywhere.

You need to have the blank loaded so the burn app can determine rated and available burn speeds for that particular media.
