I'm looking to buy one. There's some things I'd like to know first, though:
1. What's the best place to buy one? My PS2 is unmodded, and I'd prefer to use a slidetool rather than install a flip-top.
2. What % of burned games will it work on (like, if I was to download a game off a reputable BitTorrent tracker from a reputable release group, would it work?)
I bought Swap Magic 3.6 and a flip top for my ps2 and they don't work! Get a mod chip to avoid frustration and headaches about this stuff...plus they aren't much more expensive. That's just my opinion though, there seems to be plenty of people who have working swap magic gear.
A good place to buy this would be mod-chip.com. They sell a bundle pack which includes the discs (DVD and CD) and the slide tool. All games work using the Swap Magic, though some have to be patched or rebuilt - but only a very few of them. I never had any problems using my swap magic discs with the slide card (or flip top case). Swap Magic are much cheaper than a mod chip cause after you buy the chip you have to get someone to install it - and the installation is the expensive part.
I dont no if its cheaper but I bought hd loader for 30 some dollars and got a free one that I plan to sell and get my money back...and I had an extra 80 gig...but harddrives arent very expensive..
who ever wrote that thread is a god in my opinion...cause I spent a week trying to get my own mods to work that I through together from different posts and stuff and then that person puts that online...
a lot easer...just put your hdloader formated harddrive into your computer and copy the iso he provides to the harddrive, put it back in your ps2 and run hdloader. then run that program and fallow the instructions...it works great.
Yes swap magic does work, and with the newest version you will be able to play all games copied apart from dual layered games, which you can copy you've got to rebuild. I have swap magic and out of the 50+ games I've backed up I haven't had a single problem.

mod-chips are about 5X more expensive for a good one and it involves opening your console up which could mean far more of a head ache if you get any solder over anything. Swap magic would work on games from bittorrent and the slide tools quite easy to use i have one myself.
Well i answered you questions below hope i coul hel[p.
1. What's the best place to buy one? My PS2 is unmodded, and I'd prefer to use a slidetool rather than install a flip-top.
Th ebest place i know to but the swpamagic and fliptop is http://www.consoleasia.com they got swap 3.6 plus slide card for 24.99 i believe
2. What % of burned games will it work on (like, if I was to download a game off a reputable BitTorrent tracker from a reputable release group, would it work?)around 99% percent will work some will need a patch of course but a few will nto work.
3. How exactly does it work? well its like this you put in te swap magic then you push the slide card to the left then you insert burned disk then you push the slide card to the right then it should load up the games pretty easily i prefer fliptop my self though.
