I know this has probably been aked before, but i am having problems finding it with the search engine.

so my question is what is the absolute best media for backing up ps2 games. And also what is the best media format, is it dvd-r or dvd+r burned with a dvd-rom booktype.

If anybody has an answer, can you please tell me the specific name and brand of the dvd pack.

Most people would say vertibam, but never mention the exact item. Because there are many types of vertibam. I mean there are so many different one like 4x 8x all with different vertibam name. it confusing.

Verbitam DataLife PLUS DVD-R 8x

No problems at all with them for my games.

Its a combination of media and burning speed.

ok,if i told you sony dvdrs work best would you believe me?now somone else comes by and says verbs are the best would you believe them?because that is what is gonna happen.you see what im getting at?the best media would be determined by its compatibilty with your burner.since we all dont have the same burners there is no way to tell which is the best.unless someone has the same burner as you and knows which media works best for them.and the only way that person found out is by using a bunch of different media to compare to one another or asked somebody who tryed a bunch of different media and had the same burner.and my burner doesnt burn DVD-R too well while other burners dont burn DVD+R too well.that doesnt have anything to do with the quality of the format as far as backups not coming out good.once again your burner would determine if DVD-R or DVD+R is better.

to put it bluntly.most dvdrs should work with your burner(unless your burner is DVD-RW or DVD+RW meaning they can only burn one format).or i would say that is a crappy burner you got.but as far as the best,you might never know until you compare different media on your own.but im sure most media should work alright.

It's mostly about your PS2. DVD-R is more compatible with older PS2 models and Ritek and Verbatim are both great brands.

burner and media compatibly is more important than ps2 compatibilty.there have been too many people that have refuted the claim that DVD+R doesnt work on v1-v4 ps2.i distinctly remember someone saying DVD+R works fine on their ps2 v1.some people have said DVD-R doesnt work on slims but alot of people have had sucess with DVD-R.what may be the problem is their burners dont burn too well to that format and blame it on the ps2.older ps2 might play DVD-R better but if your burner burns well to DVD+R it shouldnt be a factor.meaning DVD+R should work.and slims might play DVD+R better but if your burner burns well to DVD-R it also should play.when it comes down to it every brand of media and both formats have worked on every version of ps2 at one time or another.

Sui-cyco: Yeah I guess your right but a lot of people have had success with Ritek or Verbatim DVD-R discs so I figured I would suggest them.

Life4k2: You are just going to have to try different brands and figure out what works best with your burner and PS2. I suggest you start with a 10 pack or so of Ritek DVD-Rs and see how that goes. You should burn them on the slowest possible speed.

on the flip side of that,there are media brands that have a greater compatibilty with a wider range of dvd burners.verbs fit that description as well as ritek.i have yet to find a brand of dvdrs that didnt work for me.though there is a slight quality difference.ive used sony,verbs,maxell,tdk,philips,and hp.sony worked the best with a noticeable quality difference.while the others worked about the same.i also have a sony burner so i guess you can do the math.

Well I have a Sony burner and have the best luck with Sony DVD+R for movie backups, sometimes it will have trouble recognizing DVD-R blanks. However, using the same process and same discs and same burner for 2 different games yielded one that works perfect and loads fast while the other chugs and chugs and chugs and loads after 5 minutes of spin or so. For some reason the discs do say 1-8x compatable but my machine will only burn them at 4x or faster so I'm not sure what causes this.

i too started experiencing difficulty burning to DVD-R.i updated my firmware and now all is fine.there could be many reasons why your game doesnt play right.which game is it?

It's TMNT 2: Battle Nexus. Odd thing here...I burned a copy at 4x with dvd decryptor and it was not loading fast enough but then I burned a copy at 8x with the same program and it works perfectly. Maybe the V13 PS2 works best with faster burns?

in DVD Decrypter they tell you the supported write speeds for each disc.some disc burn at high speeds while others you can burn at low speeds.its just how the disc is compatible with your drive.

isn't it weird that full speed burns play but slow speed burns don't? theoretically a slower burn should have a higher accuracy rate...but who knows.

@life4k2,

Here are some of the best medias I've used to do all my PS2 and DVD movies back up successfully. They are infact, top notch medias in the market nowadays. Below is what I prefer/like in order of brands.

01) Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan, id code: YUDEN000-T02-00)
02) MAXELL 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan, id code: MAXELL-002-00)
03) FUJI 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan, aka Yuden as well, id code: YUDEN000-T02-00)
04) SONY 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan, aka Yuden as well, id code: YUDEN000-T02-00)

Note: don't be a fool and put that CMC or Shitmorex aka Memorex and any unknown crap brands inside your dvd burner. Spend your dollar$ on TY, Maxell, Fuji, Sony and Verbatim, and you'll be square away.

thanks for all the suggestion, and i will try with 10 packs or lower before i buy the bulks.
I am currently using "imitation" DVD-R. i think it is very chep, most people says it sucks, but i have never had a bad burn on my lite-on burner w/ it.

Does the laser on my ps2 go bad because the media is cheap and not recommended b most.

nobody but a lab techinician with high tech testing equipment could tell you if there is adverse effects to playing games on certain media.if some one tells you that there is then that is their opinion.there are people that say certain media will destroy your ps2 lens and have no valid way of proving it except jumping to conclusions and hearing it from somebody who claims to be an expert who also doesnt prove anything but expects people to believe their opinions.

@life4k2,

Honestly, I wouldn't let any "imation DVD-R/+R" near my dvd burner. The majority of members here at AD.com and including myself, would say Taiyo Yuden (including Fuji & Sony), Maxell, and Verbatim is the best/top media regardless. You can get them online and it's as cheap as them Imation, Memorex (this really sucks), Princo, or any unknown brands etc.

Again, you can try the 25 packs of either MAXELL, Fuji or Sony 8X DVD+R (make sure it says "MADE IN JAPAN" on the package), it cost anywhere from $10.99 - $13.99 when it's on sale at your local Wal-Mart, Office Depot, CompUSA and Best Buy.

You know i don't know why people buy verbatims or taiyo yudens. They are ridiculously expensive, and there are plenty of dvd-rs that do the same job for about a tenth of the price. I use ritek GO5s at 4X and they work absolutely fine for me and alot of people. I just feel that alot of people fall for the 'more expensive means better' trap.

You won't be able to find taiyo yuden in the stores, you have to buy them off the net (at least where I live) You'll probably be fine with just ritek GO5s, I've never had a problem with them, and neither has alot of other people.

@life4k,

You said: "its hard to get taiyo yuden medias in the store, i cant find them anywhere."

Re-read my earlier post. Sure you'll be able to find Taiyo Yuden at your local Wal-Mart, Best Buy, CompUSA etc. As a matter of fact, the FUJI and SONY 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" is Taiyo Yuden, meaning they all have the same id code as "YUDEN000-T02-00" and both of Fuji & Sony "M.I.J" were made by YUDEN as well. In the end, the choice is yours to make, it's your call and your money. So spend them wisely.

Because they only made genuine media, it's media will last longer. In other word, any "Made In Japan" blank media will top any CMC/MEMOREX or any unknown crap medias.

Tell you the truth, if I can I would buy "Made In Japan" and "Made In Singapore" medias only if available.

You seem to be forgetting that there are a lot of places outside of the u.s, e.g the u.k where i live, where it is almost impossible to find Taiyo Yudens that aren't online and are not hideously expensive or fakes, £15 for 10 when i can get 25 riteks for £7? I think i know what i'm sticking with.

@life4k2,

Any of the FUJI or SONY that says "MADE IN JAPAN" on the package is likely made by Taiyo Yuden. Especially, the 4X or 8X DVD+R FUJI and SONY. Honestly, I recommend you to get the 8X DVD+R FUJI (Made In Japan) at Best Buy or Wal-Mart if you can find them. They're really cheap like 13.99 for 25 packs.

Why is the DVD+R better? Because you can easily booktype it into a DVD-ROM format. This will make more easier for your PS2 console to read/load/play better, even if you have an older PS2 console (keep in mind that you have to burn with either Nero or DVD Decrypter to get the DVD+R booktype into DVD-ROM though), or if your dvd burner is capable of doing booktype then you're square away.
