Hey I used Grade A datawrite discs when I first got my burner two years ago but, early this year I started buying these 'budjet' discs and I have found that they have ruined most of my dvd burns. Now i have alload of dvds that have no use and am disapointed that i saw a bargain and i purchased them to find the quallity jumps stops and has many read errors. So i've come to ask your advise after spending 2-3 hrs searching the web for the best media out at the momment. My dvd burner is a pioneer dvd-rw DVR-107d and i usually play them on my play station because my 6 disc dvd player is currently taking a dump and wont play any dvd due to smoke & dust within the machine. I've come across a few brands which i was hoping you would explain which is the best buy and best performace with play back.

Hi there,

Here are 2 sites with lots of very good information regarding media quality:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

After reading lots of threads on Afterdawn, I would suggest you stick with Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell, TDK DVD-R

Before there's so many changes of getting bad media, like TDK DVD+R you have a 50-50 change of getting excellent quality and 50-50 change of getting elto crapo media made by CMC Magnetics.

Cheap cheap stuff like Memorex.

I just bought off the web, Genuine Taiyo Yuden from a place several people have ordered before and know they are genuine Taiyo Yuden.

And it was not much much more than other media at the corner store, which maybe a gamble everytime !

I am in Canada so I ordered from http://www.blankmedia.ca

If your in the USA, ask in here, there's a few good place to order for the states !

If you decide to purchase some media, and would like to know what's the Media ID of those disks, you can use:

In the US, I recommend and buy from Rima.com, Supermediastore.com, and NewEgg.com... And like cougar_ii said, stick with the good stuff. Taiyo Yuden is no doubt the best! The Maxell +R "Made in Japan," Verbatim, Fuji +R, and the TDK -R can be found at good deals at local retailers if you need your media in a hurry...

LOL...Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim, even in the UK~! the Ritek G05s that gurnard mentioned i have had good success with too~ :)

as creaky said, i would also suggest NOT buying the bulkpaq OR the datawrite titanium, bulkpaq is one of those that are known to have FAKE Taiyo Yuden coding. and datawrite titanium..NOT GOOD..here is an example of WHAT you might be getting.

Datawrite Titanium DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AE1 8x (crap)

Datawrite Titanium DVD-R 4.7GB MCC 03RG20 16x (this would be ok but i can imagine that these are pricier than the 8x rated ones)

Datawrite Titanium DVD-R 4.7GB TTH02....... 16x (i PERSONALLY despise TDK coded media, but you MIGHT have better luck, but, why take the chance when you don't need to?)

Datawrite Titanium DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.M01 16x (ouch again)

Datawrite Titanium DVD+R 4.7GB PRODISC.R03 8x (i've had prodisc media in the past, NOT GOOD, average at best...would NOT recommend)

you basically need to watch out for the CMC MAG ones...those are the WORST of the bunch for datawrite titaniums...

hope that helps~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Hey guys, thanks again for the advise but, you have left me confuced and what to buy so anyways i've been searching ebay 'buy it now' items. As it is much easier to find everythign that you could possibley want. If you could check them out and give me the best 1 for dvd usage.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50-BenQ-8x-4-7GB-Printable-DVD-R-50-DISCS_W...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5229922367&r...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5130495821&r...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50-BenQ-8x-4-7GB-Printable-DVD-R-50-DISCS_W...

The reason why i have gone for printable is because i hate branded discs especially when you box them with a writen title. Thanks guys I dont want to be a hassel, i just want a safe brand that i can stick with for a long time without been unsure if these are good enough?
Anyways thanks again for all your advise.

no hassle.
there's 2 ways to answer your question. DO NOT buy media off eBay. period!. it's not worth the risk. eBay is great for lots of things, i myself use eBay a fair bit, BUT i have never and would never buy media of any description off there, too many scammers on there.

plus especially as there are many reputable sites you can order from anway.

the other part of the question is avoid Bulkpaq with a passion. will read the rest of your post now

still reading your replies... and just noticed - i'd answered the Bulkpaq question further up the post. Bulkpaq Orange 8x -R that i used too many 100s of and have still got (argh!) are FAKEs so i would never go near ANY Bulkpaq. Ever again!

a few people round here have been 'burned' by eBay purchases recently, but aside from that, i wouldn't even trust feedback for someone who was selling media, where i would trust feedback for other purchases.. media is something the unwary can get stiffed over in the average store, never mind someone on eBay selling media

100% agree there, save yourself the headache and DON'T buy media off ebay, regardless of the seller's feedback. i can safely bet that MOST of the positive feedbacks were from buyers that KNEW NOTHING about dvd media in general, they were the "average joe" looking for something inexpensive and that worked (for the time being).

FAKE media coding is running rampant on ebay, as this is an easy way for sellers to "cash in" on the unsuspecting 1st time media buyer by offering "free shipping" or "best price on ebay"...when in fact, they are just unloading their CRAP media to the unknowing.

i stand by what i said about the datawrite platinums, and naturally, creaky has MUCH more experience with the dreaded bulkpaqs :) good luck...

@ keen3h hi :)
avoid ebay like the plague. lots of branded fakes. if you buy where creaky buys you can't go far wrong.
there are the exceptions of course on ebay. one of the members on here sells on ebay. can't remember who, some one else will know i'm sure and will tell us.
Ritek white faced printables id out as G05.
