More than likely it will have to be a Mod where you have to have a LARGE USB External Hard Drive.. In order to fit the blue ray games on there..

Blue Ray burner drives when they come out will be expensive and the Media will to so will it really be worth going the disc route probably not for awhile untill the prices come down...

exactly :) hell, when the xbox first came out, cpu graphics were already killing it. they've only gotten better. if i want to play M$ versions of a game, i'll stick to a machine with 88+ controls rather than 12.

the ps3 might be worth it...only time will tell.

The best part about ps3 is the blu-ray which cost more than 800$ just for a blu ray reader...and for a burner it cost 2500$,so the ps3 will last a good 15 years and the 360 around 5-7 since its only using dl, and hd dl

OMG. You um, you seem pretty ignorant to how hardware works. Um, really ignorant.

The best part about ps3 is the Blu-ray which cost more than 800$ just for a blu ray reader...and for a burner it cost 2500$,so the ps3 will last a good 15 years and the 360 around 5-7 since its only using dl, and hd dl
Where to start with this one......

Blu ray players costing $800... Well, yeah. Why? Because Sony owns proprietary rights to them, much like they did the UMD. And realistically, take a look at the UMD film market. That pretty much floundered for the most part. Sony still regularly releases THEIR OWN movies on it for a few bucks. Columbia (Who might as well be Sony, regarding their film agreements) releases a few. And that's about it. The other movies on the shelf are mostly past releases that film companies are trying to sell off the rest of. It was unprofitable because of Sony's royalty system.

Sony + New Format = Bad Idea. And I know that will make a lot of people angry. But I will explain *WHY* I say this. So please read on, as there is legitimate cause here.

Sony has introduced and pushed new formats in the past. I will name them for all to read.

-UMD (Again, film companies have pulled out due to retarded 'royalties' system by Sony, which is said to be carried over with Blu-ray)
-LaserDisc. Hey, we all remember those big records. Yeah, you took four of them, and you had a movie that stopped every twenty or thirty minutes. And the Quality was simply astounding, because this amazing new format looked.... Exactly the same as a VHS. lol.
-BetaMax. Yeah. That was Sony. The quality was poor even by the standards back then. Sony hadn't gotten the idea for propietary media, but they pushed this in the Beta vs. VHS phase, claiming it was the future... And um, no.

THIS is why Sony + New Media Format = Bad Idea. Point and Case.

As for the actual media itself, yes, the capacity is amazing. The actual read speeds (Feel free to check up on this) are low. What does that equate to? Long load times. That sounds very familiar. But I will give them that it has a HUGE capacity. And THAT is a landmark. So kudos to them there.

Let's all remember the rumor that the PS3 might only be released as 3.2Ghz. Yes, it is a rumor. But let's consider it with Sony's last cutting edge console (a portable is not a console.) The PS2 was spec'd at 1Ghz, with 128mb ram, and a 64mb dedicated video. It was spec'd as such BY SONY until less than 30 days before launch. Rumors were that it had been slowed down to 500Mhz. Actual fact was that it had been knocked down to 300, with 32mb ram. Sony was BS'ing the world about their hardware.

And they did it with the games too. Who remembers the Metal Gear Solid 2 clips? And the FFX ones? You know, the gorgeous "ACTUAL GAMEPLAY" screenshots and trailers. The ones that turned out to be a load of crap from Sony. They were CG videos, nothing more. Sony lied.

Now, regardless of what camp someone is in: Sony, Nintendo, Microsuck, or even PC (Linux, Windows, Mac); why should anyone believe that Sony's new "Powerhouse System" is going to be any less of a letdown?

[And as for PSP, I have one, I love it. Great piece of equipment, but let's not forget the huge number of units that shipped with dead pixels. We call that "Shoddy Manufacturing", can you say that with me? SHHHHHHHOOOOOOOODDDDDDDYYYYYY MMMMMAAAANNNNNNUUUUUUFACTURING. Good. And hey, it's not like that was the first system they did that on.]

Now before anyone gets hissy; the 360 shipped roughly 2000 dead units (Out of how many HUNDRED thousand in the first six months?), the Dreamcast first shipment was ALL dead. And Nintendo had problems with some of the first GBA shipment. So I don't specify this as a Sony only trouble. I will say that they've had more issues than other companies in their track record.

As for the original question "How will you mod the PS3?" I say, 'With great joy, as I will have so many more games to play on it!' Hee hee.

That was early on, and due to several recent case rulings in multiple countries (Particularly Australia) it seems that the harsh methods previously mentioned may not ever go into effect after all. Odds are, they will pick a similar protection method to that of the PSP. Which is why, when I eventually get one, I will never update it. Ever. Lol.

who dug this up? its pointless right now.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

As I'm sure you are aware with yor time on this board:

Pointless=FUN.

@GTR35

As for mod chips, it's never (at least never been found) been that an inside employee leaked mod chip designs. It's always been outside people, through lots of methodical reverse engineering, which in most cases is illegal. Ironically though, there are all kinds of fun little caveats to this. I don't know how it is handled internationally; but there is actually a legitimate educational premise under which a 'student' or 'researcher' might be able to legally reverse engineer a product, such as a game console, for his or her pwn purposes. However, they would not legally be able to publish their results. Adding a bitof humor to the oddity, there is a fun little catch to this, that states in some cases, the 'researcher' must ask the company for permission, once the 'researcher' has asked, they are free to proceed, regardless of whether the company actually approves of this or not. There are all kind of fun little legalities to this, and people have spent many many years both enforcing these laws internationally, and looking for more loopholes and caveats. It's a very messy topic, that no one can understand COMPLETELY. As for an inside man, it's never been indicated in any past systems, and I can say with some pretty strong confidence, that I don't think that will happen this time either.

I hope that clears things up a bit, and maybe someone will have a better understanding from it. That is, after all, the purpose of my rantings.

Besides, if the PS3 is anything like the PSP(And it is), I am fairly certain that software cracks will be much more popular, due to the fact that they don't void warranties, or require hardware/soldering savvy.

Like I said, it WILL be cracked. My only opinion here, that seems to stand out from the croud, is that I have some suspicion a software crack may come down the pipe long before a mod chip, and i'm certainly not opposed. Although truthfully, as much as I love getting new hardware, I don't think I'll be purchasing this one for at least the first year it's out. While I've gotten some great use out of my PSP, and I haven't regretted buying it on day 1, I just don't know if I'm really all that itchy for more Sony. I have every game system currently being sold, and I've honestly been enjoying my original XBox more than anything lately. Just because of the homebrew scene. There is so much cool stuff there, that it seems impossible for me to get bored with it.

I am debating whether the PS3 will ever see that kind of homebrew support. It's a much faster system than the original XBox (And please folks, let's not get into hardware here, I really don't want to hear it from M$ fanboys OR Sony fanboys. It's just gotten tired) but many big industry leaders have publicly discussed how much more difficult it is to program software for; additionally, major tech sources are now leaking lots of info about how the system doesn't seem "Gaming friendly". IMO, good hardware is good hardware. Whether it's 'convenient' to work with or not. The real question is how many die hard Sony fans are going to make software for this system once it's cracked. The XBox had a different following than PS*(Insert Number Here) to begin with, and it seems that the XBox has a larger programming-savvy base than the PS*(Insert number here). Now, I don't know if that's true or not, and I don't feel the PSP is honestly a good indication. It, being the only protable console of it's kind, has attracted programmers from all ends of the spectrum, even unix coders have gotten in on THAT one. But I think that once the PS3 *IS* software cracked, and make no mistake; it WILL be, we will see how many great technical geniuses are willing to make that system great. And I am eager for the 360 to become more widely cracked as well, I believe it is only a matter of time before it is just as cracked as the original, and I can have some real fun with it.

Well, if it is done on a software basis, rather than a mod chip, it is very likely that there will be no effect on anyone's online play. Truthfully though, the practicality of a mod(Chip or software crack) seems like it's range is going to be much different this time around than before. We're talking about discs with a LOT of storage capacity. And I expect that within the first year, games will start using more than 10gb. Especially RPGs and shooters. That means that there won't be so much practical storage for them. Especially once the system hits it's mid life. Games may very well range past 50gb, if not more. At that point, there will be no practical means to illegally pirate games. And that's good for the mod community, because it will bring more of a legitimate angle to the modding community, rather than just a bunch of rampant piracy.

I've always been more interested in what an amatuer can program in his living room, anyways. I think it could be very good for the homebrew scene, and a lot of gamers, who would suddenly see a new side of all this, with homebrew games and apps as a new big phase. If Sony handles it well and/or gets lucky; they *could* have quite a successful machine on their hands. Or they could do it all wrong, and fail miserably.

All things considered, Sony has made some mistakes lately, especially in the legal realm. They have said a lot of things that either make people angry, or dissapointed. And quite frankly, they're overdue for getting something right, and as strange as it is for me to say this: The PS3 just *might* be it. Who knows? It really is about time for them to do something right. What with alleged racist ads, a failed countersuit over rumble technology, insulting their own customer base, announcing almost no games actually being available at launch, announcing a HIGH price, and a HUGE mishap with the public demo of their Blu-ray software. I don't mean that sarcastically, either. A company this big, screwing up this many things lately, just might be focusing a little too hard on one thing, and if that one thing(Possibly PS3?) pays off, it could all be worth while. Only time will tell.
