Old bump here. Sony has had enough time to see where MS f-ed up with protecting 360. Let's see if they make things a bit tougher with PS3. I seriously doubt it if PSP was any indicator. Hell it may be hacked before Christmas. That'd be a nice Christmas present of us all.

there are certainly a lot of creative people out there, so im sure something will be done. for starters though i would just like to have a bugfree system. to me that would be more than a merry xmas lol. after that i'll start reading up on what people have come up with and such on the modding issue...

With all this talking about modding the PS3 and whatnot, how are we going to get these "back-ups"? Let's face it, how long is it gonna take us to download or rip a PS3 ISO.

Then again, we might get drives with faster read speeds and I guess T1 will be the new standard internet confection.. so it might not be that bad, but still...

Dude we already have ps3 iso's. Not it is all a matter of playing them. Hopefully updated firmware right now will have an effect. Maybe there will be a usb extreme in the near future or something.

In fact I think we would be fooling our selves if we have a community this large, and did not realize that there are some enemies present.

Although I am newbe on this forum, I am for almost 12 years in electronics hardware and embedded software development. However my ?gaming? education (for leisure purpose) ended on Super Nintendo, when I was hitting my twenties. Since I deal with hard&soft 40 hours a week ;-) I do not spend more time playing or doing enything which involves this type of entertaining. It would be just too much for me. And my interest in latest game consoles just came from the fact that recently my old friend from high-school visited me and asked me if there?s ?anything I can do with his son?s brand new PS3 to make it working like moded PS2. I asked him to sit down, have a drink while trying to explain that ?it is not that easy or impossible?. I ended this conversation saying that it would be much more easier to modify ?Voyager? electronics guts forcing it to act like a dishwasher instead of ?interplanet? probe. He was somehow amazed, but he finally realized what kind of work needs to be done in order to reverse engineer such console and create so called ?mod chip? or soft crack.
Being completely non-interested in today?s games, consoles, not on spending long hours on these, after this meeting I realized that even with PS2-like game consoles, people who developed and designed such modifications, they had to be in possession of something ?more? and they had to be in ?numbers?.

But let me get to the point. Among all software issues that can be pretty easy resolved by some intelligent individuals who have unlimited time and resources for such activities, the hardware issue is just another story. To have hardware reengineered you need not only your best engineering (or equivalent) knowledge in digital circuitry, but also you need a specs or their logical and electrical equivalent for all ASIC?s chips (ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuit) which are used on almost all mainboards nowadays. And getting these informations by reverse engineering such ASCI chip is almost impossible. The reason is very simple. Single ASIC chip (for example Actel, Xilinx or Altera FPGA?s chips - commonly used in newest motherboards) are protected from being read once they are programmed by manufacturer. The protection I am talking about is ?hardware? in nature and it has no match with software one. Without going too deep in ASIC nature, let me just say that using commercially available tools there is no way to copy or evaluate single ASIC chip when it is protected from being read. Even having detailed electrical schematics of such motherboard with eventually one or more ASIC chips on it, the path to unveiling ?how it is works? is really long and bumpy and in many cases it may lead to the dead end.
I have heard stories long before PS or GameCubes were invented about alternative ways to ?get into chip? using high-tech, expensive, laboratory equipment (x-rays analysis, super precision milling machines) which were probably used by military during ?cold war? and they are probably used now for military or intelligence. But who can afford for these or who can have an access to these for the time needed to perform really complicated task to get into chip?
And still, mod chips are become available in the market short after new console is introduced. How can it be done? I ask myself this question for some time. Are ?mod-chip? sales really prospective market to engage such resources or is it a matter of just getting to right information at the right time? I leave this answer to you, but I seriously doubt that it is in power of the smartest engineer designer in the planet to get such motherboard and OS software reengineered in such a short time (let?s say few months) without having information from ?inside?. Those of you who make a living from designing applications based on ASIC chips know what I am talking about. The level of difficulty and complexity of such chips is just enormous. We are talking about few hundred thousands of logical elements inside a single ASIC chip and in some cases it is over a million ? and all of these can be configured and programmed to operate billion number of combinations and/or ?sequences?, which is even worse. And please note that among these enormous numbers a single mistake (just one) in re-engineering process may just lead to nowhere. My point is that just that with the best knowledge, experience and the highest tech tools necessary to create latest console modification is just not enough. You just have to have a full or at least a part of original spec to create such solution, IMHO there is just no other effective way. Is it possible that I might be also wrong?

Maybe, I dunno, I just started computer engineering at college :P but I'll tell you that what you are saying makes sense. I'll also tell you that there are some pretty bored people out there who have a lot of time on their hands and wouldn't mind spending it trying to reverse engineer these things... Who knows, maybe somebody will find a way to get that ASIC chip info without having to buy expensive military equipment or whatever.

I'm no pessimist or an optimist but a realist and honestly, I've seen some "hacking" teams do some things before that I wouldn't have thought about in a million years.

With all that said, I think that getting a mod chip or a soft mod wouldn't take as long as we expect... patience is a crucial factor in this process.

ps3 games come on blue-ray disks and downloading isos will take a lot of time. also, blue-ray burners are very expensive and furthermore blue-ray writable disks are costly.Hackers got a hell of a job to do.

hopefully something comes out quickly.im thinking of buying one but i cant buy expensive original games.cant wait to play motor storm and FOM.

Wow. I didn't think this would resurrect again six months later...

There's so much more information out there that is so much more up to date, why not go there? We've got Linux, homebrew, all kinds of stuff, go check that stuff out, it's very cool!

In the past (XBOX days) the mod chip came first, then a software mod. I have 2 XBOX and one has a hard wire mod chip and the other one has the soft-mod. Both get the job done just as well as the other. I just wish they would come out with a mod for the PS3 so we can relieve some of the tension and anticipation. I like my satisfaction NOW, right now! Please :)
