i have a dvd recorder ilo dvdr05 have modes hq slp 1hr to 8hr wnat to record lp mode which is 3hr which is 180 min but dvd player wont flip to any higher time than 120min which a dvd can hold, is there a way to record 3hrs on a dvd if not why do they have these modes on this dvdrecorder thank you
I'm trying my very best to make sense to your question here. So you want to back up/burn a 3 hrs long movie onto a single layer DVD5 (dvd-r/dvd+r)? If so, then yes.... you can have DVD Shrink, Nero Recode 2 to compress the movie, once you're done with the encoding/compressing part, just use whatever your desire burning/backing up program to do the burning. At least, that is what I did when I'm backing up LOTR: Return Of The King (a 3 hrs long movie) onto a Fuji 8X DVD+R "M.I.J" blank with the main movie only.
In addition, if you have the money and want to go the other route, which is a DVD9 aka DVD-R/+R DL blank. With this kind of blank, it can holds more gigs and can produced a better quality if you do a DVD9 to DVD9 copy i.e. backing up a single 3 - 3 1/2 hrs long movie onto a DVD9. Or you can compress/encode 2 movies to fill in the DVD9 blank easily. However, you might end up losing a few quality on the pictures, but it won't be noticeable though.
In regards to the dvd player's time of minutes, don't worry about it. It does its thing naturally. However, I'm lost in addendum to your "dvd recorder ilo dvdr05" question, due to the fact that I've never heard of it and I've never done it that way before.

joshmack - I believe what you are talking about is a stand-alone DVD Recorder, correct? If so, I have a Panasonic and there is a button on the remote that allows me to switch recording modes (xp, sp, lp, ep). I haven't experimented with going over 120 minutes, but I am under the assumption that the if I choose the lp mode (4 hours) that the DVD Recorder will do the compression to make the show fit onto the 120 minute blank disc. I would suggest these steps:
1. Read through the manual carefully to see if you can find an answer.
2. Try some experimentation with either some RW discs or cheap +/-R media to play around and see what happens.
3. Contact your manufacturer's customer support to see if indeed you can record something longer than 120 minutes or if your recorder may be defective.
My Panasonic also has a Hard Drive and I know that the different modes work for storing shows to the Hard Drive, I just haven't had time to play around with storing onto DVDs other than in xp mode (1 hour).
@ joshmack hi :)
as jpc00 say's bung a 4.7 dvd+rw in there set LP mode poke record and it does the business
if the recorder will not go into LP mode take it back to shop.
