Hey,
I still dont have a DVD writter, and I was checking some deals and found this DVD writter for $52. I know this is a good price for a dual layer writter but what I want to know is: is this a good writter at defeating copy protections?
I dont know if DVD writters are also categorized by 1/2 sheeps. If anyone can tell me if this is a 2-sheep burner.
Thanks in advance.

hi electron,
well, if this one is ANYTHING like my Pioneer dvr-109, then i would have to say it's a vERY good dvd burner...by the way, your dvd burner itself (hardware) does NOTHING in terms of defeating copy protections...it's software that does the job for you...some of my favorite softwares that are very good for this is DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD by slysoft (anydvd is by far the best investment i have ever made on software and it's sole purpose is to battle the encryption).
so, i have NOT had any experience with this drive so far, but, i assume it's the temporary "new model" in pioneer's line of burners...i have read that this is pretty good, but no firsthand experience...
lastly, i have no idea what you are talking about regarding "sheep", perhaps my buddy "baabaa" would know? LOL
hope that is a good start

LOL
thanks for the quick respond. The most important feature you have to look for when trying to burn copy protected CD's is whether your CD-writter is a 2-sheep burner or not. Because most new protections can only be defeated by a 2-sheep burner.
Check this out for more info and to find out how to test your writter:
http://wombleintheuk.tripod.com/Final/SheepTest/SheepTest.htm
Here is a list of 2-sheep burners from AfterDawn:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/45121
Now it looks like some dvd burners ARE 2-sheep burners but I need to know if this Pioneer burner is one of them. I dont see it in the list but this might be because it's new. At least I hope so.

well, i keep all my backups/burns to dvd format only with the occassional cd, so, naturally, my experience in cd burning is almost non-existent :) i only burn cds to put mp3s on or store data, i never even tried to copy a copyrighted cd before, so, hence my lack of knowledge regarding the "sheeps" :)
hehe...well, i guess i would have no clue then regarding the new pioneer, i have the dvr-109 and it's great (very solid, fast performance burner), nothing sheepish about it (from a comical sense, not literally) :)
have a good one, perhaps others will respond that have more knowledge bout the whole sheep thing...good luck~

what you are saying might be true about burning dvd's though. I dont know, as I said before I dont have any experience with burning dvd's. So may be the hardware doesnt matter when it comes to burning dvd's but i doubt it.

:) this is my last "help/advice" before i turn in...i know about dvd burning (media mostly) and dvd drives as i have 6 different kinds of them (4 on desktops and 2 on laptops), i have never seen any hardware for dvd burners being even REMOTELY influential in bypassing decryption for DVDs...you make a good point as it is entirely different for CDs from what i gather that you said; but, for dvds, it's SOFTWARE related to get past the dvd protection schemes nowadays. :) and i highly recommend slysoft's AnyDVD for this, in regards to DVD burning (getting past the encryption)
thanks for the chat, i hope i shed SOME light into the dvd burning arena for you, you know MUCH more about the cd-burning scene than i ever will, but this dvd media forum is MY specialty~ :)

That program called AnyDVD by slysoft will pull off the encryptions for both dvds and cds. It's a very fine background ripper.Since our 2 free ripping programs: DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter : aren't being updated anymore,AnyDVD is there to help them out. It's a very good program and you get a free 21 day trial. Mine's about to run out,so I'll have to buy it the next time for $30.It did pull off the encryption on my pink floyd cds so I could rip and burn on the fly.My main burn program Nero 6.0 will not pull off encryptions.
I never heard of 2 sheep burners. Maybe ol creaky knows. He is somewhere in the UK.
You've come to right place when you do start to backup your dvds. Everything is here at your disposal. That pioneer should be a very good quality burner.
Good Luck

Quote: If anyone can tell me if this is a 2-sheep burner.
I would say "No." Why? Because the 109, which is an excellent drive, is a 1 sheep burner. The 110 adds DVD-RAM and improved writability to 16X media. Those are the only notable improvements over the 109. However, with emulators (for games), the Pioneers, and many others, can still make the backups you desire. Therefore, the sheep rating is not a must.
LiteOn SOHW 1693S (also rebadged as Sony DRU 800 with a higher pricetag) is a 2 sheep burner. I just ordered a LiteOn 1693S to go alongside my Pioneer DVR 109. Pioneers are arguably THE BEST WRITERS on the market. If you REQUIRE the "2 Sheep" classification for your games, then the LiteOn is the way to go! For DVD backups, the Pioneer. Just get both!!!

Glancing theu this - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/45121 - i have more of a clue now, it's just wierd how i've never heard of it before. there's definitely a first for everything :)

From what I read so far it looks like a great drive.

suggested that it is a 2-sheep burner which is good but even if not I think it'd still be a good idea to get it. The best thing to do for me now looks like getting the Pioneer DVR-110 and the Plextor Premium with that combination you cant go wrong. The only thing is I gotta wait a little untill it's time to waste the money. ;)

well, the money wouldn't really be "wasted" if you get quality hardware that does exactly what you need it to do when you begin your dvd burning journey~ :)it's all about perspective~
good luck

I did the sheep testing for the pioneer 109. It passed the sheep 1 test, failed sheep 2 and safe disc 2.9, but passed the sheep 3 test. I dont' know exactly what this means it will and will not copy, but as for DVDs the Pioneer dvrives are great.
I also had a plextor px-716A burner and the Pioneer averaged about half the PI errors. Now that I am using TY discs, I basically get error free burns.
For the price, I would say get the Pioneer. I paid $70 for my DVR-109 and it was well worth it!! It seems to love DVD+R media. I have only tried Ritek R03 and YUDEN000-T02, but it liked both more than the Plextor Burner.
Here is what you should do. Invest in a DVD/CDRW combo Drive as well as the Pioneer 110. Make sure the DVD/CDRW is a sheep 2 and do all your CD copying and DVD ripping with that drive. Then only burn DVDs on the Pioneer. This will make your Drive last many times longer as Ripping DVDs is harse on drives and will wear out your burner.
