Hi all, been a while since I visited (SORRY!).Anyways,I have a 1-1 copy (or so I assume at this time) of a movie that a friend made for me.When I try to look at the files by right-clicking/explore from the device drive I dont see any files there. Also,DVD Decrypter wont acknowledge that there is even a disk in the device. However, when I use Power DVD to view the movie all is fine.My thoughts are that maybe this is because my friend used a 32bit environment as i'm in the NTFS.Any thoughts here?

It could b bad media although u can view the movie doesnt nessecarly mean u can copy or right to the DVD etc... thats my guess u can use DVD Identifier from the software section. This is free and it will tell u the exact manifacturer.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

I hope that helps...

Not really, although I did download DVD Identifier just to see if that might help in all this.According to Identifier this is just a blank disk if i'm reading the results correctly - [Blank Disk Capacity : 2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]

This is all fairly new to me so i'm not sure what's "The norm" here and I guess i'm used to seeing some files if there is something on the disk.

I did however find out that this disk was burned using Nero Smart Start with DVD Shrink being used first.I guess i'm more curious to know if there is some type of setting used to mask or hide files on DVD's after the burn process? Or some type of encryption that might still be in place that would have this kind of effect?

shizzt,wrong thread,anyways,while i am here
you say this film plays with powerdvd....is this off the disk,or off the hardrive,if its off the hardrive, then test mode was probably used to burn it(if nero has that option),not a great fan of nero

does it play on a standalone?

maybe try a different dvd utility (nothing wrong with dvd identifier, i just use dvdinfopro instead) - download it free from www.dvdinfopro.com) and run that disc thru it's media info check, pasting results here

I'm guessing the original copy was burned/backed up on a poor/crap media in the first place. CMC MAG is known to be one of the poorest media in the market and or media technology. Thus, it can not be burn or play after so many months. This is the main reason why so many members here at AD.com despise CMC regardless of how successful/accurate the back up is in the first place. I recommend you or your friend to use high grade media such as Taiyo Yuden (including Fuji & Sony "Made In Japan), Verbatim "MCC or MKM" and MAXELL "Hitachi" in the future to prevent from the issue above you mentioned.

So am I reading this correctly and that after some period of time of being burned that the files will be erased in certain areas of the disk? If so, then that does'nt explain why the movie can be viewed in any player but I am unable to retreive the files off of the disk for future backup.

Is media THAT important that it will cause problems like this?

Media is one of the most important aspects, and bad media such as cmc are one of the biggest contributors to peoples problems..

creaky,

Nicely said.... I couldn't say it any better than this.

@Uugah,

Believe it or not, I was once a newbie too. Now let me tell you a short story about myself. A few years back then I used to back up some (around 15 - 20 movies on Memorex media) and after 3 months or so, about more than half of them movies -- I couldn't get it to finish any of them on any of my stand alone dvd players. It kept on freezing and stops for whatever unknown reasons - this makes me pissed and mad. With that being said, I went ahead and bought me some Fuji and Maxell DVD+R (Made In Japan) to do a completed re-back up all of them and to my surprise, they all still plays flawlessly today. Since then I never look back or touch any of CMC aka Memorex products. However, the choice is yours to make. It's your money, your call, so make it wisely.

as alkohol and creaky already so mentioned, i am also a very firm believer in the QUALITY of dvd media makes the WORLD of difference in dvd backups/playability.

i also have had a very similar situation with my CMC MAG manufactured Memorex discs YEARS ago, approx. after 3 months, when i wanted to watch them again, BAM..i was stuck, i couldn't even get the files off original backup to make a copy~

so, yes, please stay away from CMC MAG media...your dvd identifier will be a great friend to you in the future...stick with Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (those are MY 2 suggestions for media) and your luck will be much improved in the near future. :) good luck

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Wow,thanks for all the replies on this matter.I actually burned some of my own movies and brought them to another friends house to see if he could see "MY" backup files on his PC,and to my dismay NOTHING !! .

I will follow everyone's advise here and look for some other type of media that stands the test of time!

Thanks again to all that took the time to reply and to Afterdawn for putting together such a fantastic forum!
