Hi fellas!
I have a question for the experts, my friend had me look at her xbox, and I am a pc technician, I know nothing about xbox's....she said her dvd-rom drive was skipping so I realigned it and it stopped grinding....well I guess I unplugged the hard drive in the process and now it won't turn back on,the lights just flash red and green. One of her friends said you should never unplug the hard drive or it's ruined. When it boots up theres some screen saying that it needs to be serviced. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?
Thank you so much!

That is not true, it is somewhat built like a pc where it can be plugged and unplugged with no effect on the performance. That flashing red and green is called a FRAG. This is just normal when there is some type of error. When the error message popped up, what number showed up in the upper left hand corner? once you get that look here for an explaination about the error -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210562
Now that you pinned down your error, I need to ask if her xbox is modded because this may effect how to correct the error.
I will have to check later on the error message, because she says she cant see one, and she lives a long drive away. I believe the xbox was softmoded somehow, it had stepmania on it when I was foolin around with it, and the menu's looked different from a normal xbox. So im guessing there isn't a easy fix to make it normal again? Like on a pc reformating the hard drive? I guess I can only dream, I'll try and get the error message soon, thanks for the reply!
Actually I just thought of something, when I first got the xbox, I hooked it up and everything worked fine, it was just that it would only read cd's for like a minute before it would get a disc read error message, so I took it all apart and realigned the dvd rom drive. Now when I boot it theres the "you need to service this xbox" message, so It has to be releated to me taking the hard drive out.....does that make sense? It worked before I took it apart, but after I fixed the dvd drive I get the service message
it would read the cd first because like a pc it look for a boot disk, then it would boot from the HDD. actually, it is easier to fix a modded box, then a retail box because there are more options to correcting the error. when you softmod a box, it is difficult to make it back to a normal settings, but I could be wrong because my expertice is more on chipped boxes, but Ill try to help you
