Good evening, I have recently purchased a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4X media. I had used the cheaper media like Sony and Memorex from Walmart up until now. I purchased the TY brand with all hopes of never having the "skipping" and "stalling" in my movie playback. But I am still getting these issues at times and I have even seen in some instances where the movie won't even playback at all. I downloaded the DVD identifier program and checked them to see if they were really the TY discs and it shows that they are, as a matter of fact, here are the results posted below as to what they are. I have copied about 20 movies and so far about half have turned into coasters, I seem to have better luck with the Verbatim brand, they haven't let me down yet. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? I had recently been reading so many good reviews on the TY brand, and therefore that's why I made the bulk purchase. So far I'm not so impressed with these. Any help you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and have a great day!

Where did you buy the TY's? There are fake TY's on the market. Look around the inner hub for a laser inscribed # - should begin with GG or GD - what do your's begin with?
I swear by TY - over 300+ burns - not one coaster.

I bouught these from a guy on ebay who assured me these were the real thing. I just checked and they do have a laser inscribed number and it begins with GD. I wander maybe if I may have a bad batch or something? Thanks so much for your reply!

How are you considering these as coasters?

1)Erroring out while burning?
2)Stand alone player having problems when you view them?

Everyone has their own definition of coaster, but I usually consider them coastered when they actually fail during the burning process. If they are failing after the burn and giving stand alone players issues, then that's another story.

View one of the socalled coasters on your pc,using the same DVD-RW drive that burned it. You don't have to watch the entire backup.Just watch beginning,ff,chapter skip, and watch the ending. If your pc plays it's own backups ok,then probably a stand alone player issue.

Also list you DVD-RW burner: Brand name and model#.List your programs-that may also help us out.

Hi. Sorry to post on this thread but I am having the same problem. I bought the 100pk TYs 4x at Supermediastore and so far for every 10 disc I burn about 3-4 are coasters. I am using dvdinfopro to check the sectors. I've never had this problem before with TYs. I have a TDK 840G drive.

if the dvd is just skipping here and there, what you might want to do is try the DVD+R....the +r brand is a whole lot better to me....no skips or glitches anywhere on any of my burns....also, just to let you know, i am currently using verbatim DVD+R 8x.....great dvds! anyways, go buy a few dvd+r's and give that a try...i did, and no more skips for me

Did they come in a tightly shrink wrapped package without a spindle? I bought a few hundred of the supermediastore TY's a few weks ago and tried to burn a few as soon as i opened the pack and the first few didn't work too well. This might seem strange, or someone who knows more could clarify this, but when i actually went through and shuffled a few like cards, kinda dissipating the static-like feeling that they seemed to have, they worked great and havent had a problem since. Same burning process, same movie in some instances. Coincidence? I don't know, but once i did this the height of the 100 ( minus 3 or 4 ) almost doubled like they swelled back up to regular size instead of tightly cramped.

That's why I refuse to buy Taiyo Yuden discs despite everyone's assurance that they are the best discs on the market. Screw them! If they can't even put a damn logo on their discs to cut down on counterfeits, I'm not going to lose sleep going by the word of some dealer that they are genuine. Fake TYs are worse than Princos or any 3rd rate media you can think of. I'm happy with my 2nd rate Verbatims and Ridatas. ;)

It's been so long since I use any of the 4X -R, so I can't really comment that it's a fake or it's an operator's fault. However, I, on the other hand, have used and still use the Yuden 8X DVD+R, id code: YUDEN000-T02-00 and they all backed up flawlessly. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I prefer any of the 8X DVD+R YUDEN (including FUJI & SONY) and MAXELL all "Made In Japan" over any of the DVD-R that's manufactured from other places anyday anytime.

All you have to do is buy from a reputable vendor. Would you take your car to that guy under the shade tree to have it fixed? LOL

I use Rima.com and Supermediastore. Mostly Rima because they have the best price after shipping is added. I do look at the ads for fake TY's that people have purchased.

This is what the case usually is: The price is ridiculously low (majority of the time) OR it is a "Great value" or "High Quality" brand that uses a TY media code and may have TY logo displayed. These ads mostly never actually claim to be Taiyo Yuden media, but they claim to be TYG02. I guess in truth they actually are TYG02 because that is only a write strategy.

eBay, on the other hand, is a totally different story... Always ask for the hub serial. If the seller doesn't allow your question and his answer to be posted on the listing, then stay away. If he gives you a serial that isn't correct, then stay away (of course). But why buy on eBay if, after shipping, you will have paid MORE than retail anyway? As far as a logo is concerned, you would still have to have the disc in your possession to verify.

The reputable vendors that sell TY have no problems replacing your media if you get a bad batch.

These discs were in a tightly wrapped package and have a label that says ?great value.? The DVD identifier program says they are ?TY? discs and the code on the hub starts with ?GD.? It all seems to be the real thing but so far I?m not impressed at all. I have found that I always have to fall back to the Verbatim. They always work for me. Now I have about 175 of these ?so called? TY?s left. I guess I?ll end up giving these to my kids to use as Frisbees. They don?t seem to be good for anything else. I?ve sure learned a couple of things through this issue. 1 - I will not buy media off e-bay again and 2 - I believe I?ll go with the Verbatim brand. They always work for me. Not one bad one yet! I just wonder how the 100 bulk pack Verbatim would be from Rima.com - those are the one?s I am considering to be my next purchase. Thanks for your time and have a great day!

Yes, the discs I purchased from Supermedia were 'Great Value'. I've used TYs before and had great success but I'm staying away from these 'GV' discs. It's funny....I have more coasters than glasses : )

Could be the skipping and stalling is from your standalone player...it might not like the TYG02's. My GE1401P will skip on some of the TYG02's.....plus it refuses to playback MCC003's. My Sanyo plays everything flawlessly. I switched to YUDEN002's and both players love 'em. Check your "skipping" discs on a newer player if possible, the standalone player may be the culprit.

Those are excellent as well. Close second to TY. Check out NewEgg for competitive pricing on Verbs... They have the unbranded Verbs for unbeatable prices from time to time. NewEgg is very reputable, they have good prices, and the best shipping rates.

I just purchased the 4X 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden -R in tape wrap from Supermediastore.com... as luck would have it, it turns out they're actually TYG02s!

They have a laser etch of GG000123, and a hub code of KC517A407177GG. I feel like I really lucked out!

That batch was quite possibly "old" stock... Glad they turned out good for you. Personally, I've never had one problem with my TY's from Rima and Supermediastore...

This is why I love TY:
Movie burned on both discs is Barbershop, a well used disc that has seen better days. DVDFabDecrypter/Recode2 combo. Media is 100 spindle tape wrap inkjet printable TY 8X +R from Rima.

sorry to be the bearer of BAD news, those that you have are FAKE~!!!

the GD000xxx/GG000xxx coding is on the inner hub of REAL/AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yudens...there was another thread (which i can't find right now) that talked MORE in depth about these FAKES...

ouch, im sorry you got yourself some fakes and used them ALL up already...i would suggest you re-backup those movies/data on REAL Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims to ensure you have them for future use.
the FAKE TYs you have will DEFINITELY degrade over time and at such point, you might not even be able to read/play them any more. :(

I have the GD and GG but they were the 4x value pack. It seems that I'm having more errors on these discs than the TY 8x, at least that is according to dvdinfopro. It does seems unusual for TYs to be like this. I've burned TYs before and the most coaster I got out of 100 was 2. Not sure if it's my drive or DVDD. I'm trying a diff. media, burner, and started using Nero again (been burning with DVDD)to see what the problem is since I still have quite a few of these. OMG!!! I've already had about 40+ coasters!
