I just bought my first DVD burner - Sony DRU800A, and a stack of TDK 8x DVD-R.
Out of 7 burns, 2 discs came like this -

http://web.aanet.com.au/jfranek/TDK%20dvd.jpg

The bad patch on both discs is almost identical shape/size, and in the same location radially.

What is it?

Those ttg-02's should be very good discs, but manufacturers do let some bad batches out of their facility.

Dvd burner manufacturers also let some bad burners leave their facility.

I've seen the halloing, but not that patchiness on burned discs.Looks like a serious issue.

What is the firmware on that sony drv-800a? dvdidentifier will tell you.

Is that sony still under warranty?

That picture of the disc is taken by a scanner, and all that stripes and dark segments are due to the scanning. The "faulty patch" is that triangular shape near 9 o'clock position.
I bought the discs at a Sunday computer market, so I would not be surprised if they are 2nd quality.
I have the original firmware KY01. I have downloaded, but not installed as yet, KY04 update.

I see the spot you are talking about and it is bad or damaged media and has nothing to do with your drive. What quantity of package did you buy? Are the bad patches on the disc prior to burning? I would return the media and you can rip the good backups to your hdd 1st so you can burn them again onto a different media without any bad or damaged media in the package. TDK DVD-R is usually ok but beware of TDK DVD+R. About 50/50 chance of getting garbage cmc mags.

Thanks Mort
the second bad disc has almost identical shape, just a bit scaled down size, and in the same location. It would have to be a very peculiar and intermittent burner fault to produce this.

I bought a package of 50 disks - I have no idea how many will turn out bad. There is no way of telling before burning - they all look good.
Because I bought them at the Sunday market and don't have any docket, I can't return them. But it's not a big deal. It will teach me to buy in a store where I can go back to.

After the first bad experience, I do rip to hard disc first.
