I have been burning DVD's for over 2 years now. I stopped burning for about 4 months and decided to burn some stuff.Well i needed more DVD blanks so i looked at local store AD's and found a 100 pack of OFFICEMAX brand for $30 (i know i'm probably getting comments now but please read on). So i bought these and i got the first 2 to burn fine. So i went on burning and started getting "Power Calibration errors". I came one here to search for this error and found alot of posts.First thing i saw was it is the media. So i had a few Memorex DVD's laying around (I know again probably getting comments but read on) and tried one of those. Same error message. Tried a different DVD and it worked. So i thought "maybe it isn't the Media", because i used over 100 memorex DVD's and had only about 5 out of the 100 be coasters. So i came back on here searching again and tried everything. Cleaned my burner, only used one power cable for the burner, upgraded firmware, changed it to master drive, slowed down burn speed. Did all of this and tried another Memorex and failed. Now like i said i used memorex and had very successfull burns with these so i was begining to think my burner was bad. I remembered my buddy next door burns dvd's and he had some Maxell's, so i went and borrowed one of his. Burned with no problem. So i decided to return those crappy Officemax brand (don't know what i was thinking) and got a 50pack of maxells from Wal-Mart. I also made sure to look at the label and look for "made in japan". Couldn't find japan but got taiwan. Got home and did an I.D. on them and came up as "ritek-g05". I have used about 15 of them so far with not 1 coaster. So basically what it comes down to is don't try and save a few cents when you will pay more for the cheap ones in the end and listen to these guys one here, they know what there talking about. I use to buy memorex and only memorex but now i will never touch another memorex DVD.
That's the gamble you take when you buy store "brand name" media and memosux.Hard to tell which manufacturer made them.
Aceroc, stay tuned to the DVD-R media forums because we are always posting what is on sale of the good stuff and where at you can find it. I just got a hot tip several weeks ago from another member on office depot 100 Pack spindles that were coding as riteks. $28 for them, helluva bargain and 70/70 ok so far!
Creaky: I wander if all he needed was a new power supply and lubed up tray in his pc? LOL.
who knows!. i am worn down by bad media on a daily basis, seeing so many endless threads (no offense to original poster by the way) where media such as Memorex et al is involved, it just wears you out in the end :)
