As I sated earlier in http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/220108, I have used a lot of "that brand" media. Now later down the line, if the backups that I used those brand for begin to not to play in my standalone players, will I still be able to use them to make another backup on my computer? (assuming the original is not working, scratched, etc.)
Or should I order a case of maxells now and schedule my vacation from work to get burning? I know I'll be hearing from Creaky & Saugmon on this one!

Before you waste your time, just take a random sample from the earliest to the latest Memorex burns and do a PI/PO test on them. If you see PIFs exceeding 500 at any point (especially near the end of the disc), you might want to consider redoing your backups. There's alot of factors that go into a good burn, not just the media. Memorex is not the best media, but for me, it is fine for video (not data).

...and for PIF scans (i may have pointed you towards the thread already, probably have) - have a look at first link in my sig...

In addition to what DogBomb and creaky said, it will also depend on who actually made your memorex media. If you got lucky and they are ricohjpn or ritek then they will probably be ok as long as you didn't stick any paper labels on them. If they are cmags then I would be concerned and start copying them to good media asap if you're still able to.

@deaseil,

If you're going to get the Maxell, then I recommend you to grab the 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan", id code: MAXELL-002-00. This is one of the top high grade media that were made by Hitachi, it's rank in the "1st class" of all media. Other than that, you can also get the genuine TY (including FUJI & SONY "Made In Japan", id code: YUDEN000-T02-00) and Verbatim. You can't go wrong with them high grade medias with backing up no higher than 8X of speeds.

I won't be doggin on you deisel, most of us have learned our lesson with memosux. I unfortunantly used a few when I backed up my vhs and 8 mm home movies well before I got into the pc backing up. They are ok for now,but I will have to do them all over again, UGH!That's 15 years worth! I did have quite a few coasters in that cyberhome tv recorder using crappy sony/cyberhome/and memorex media.

That's why I'm a plus format guy. The media I try goes in several burners including that cyberhome. It does love the verbatim data life plus +8x,despite specs listing 4x speed media only.

I'd go back to the oldest ones, and check to make sure your dvd-rom or DVD-RW drive will accept them. Those drive/s just may spit them out.

If the drives recognize them, then hope the errors are few and you'll be able to re-rip them: DVD Decrypter : ISO Read and ISO Write.

BTW, staples have the fuji 8x 30 packs on sale for $11.94. The plus are yuden000-t02.

I downloaded kprobe and checked some of my discs. heres some logs-

Date : 8/17/2005 6:20:45 PM
Model : 2-0-0-0 E:SONY DVD RW DRU-710A
Disc : DVD-R , Prodis [Prodisc Technology Inc.]

Sampling count : 112564
Errors : 34
PI Max : 154

ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
Scanned range : 0 - 2192666
Sampling count : 109179
Errors : 0
PI Max : 135

PIF Total : 1811

Date : 8/17/2005 7:04:15 PM
Model : 2-0-0-0 E:SONY DVD RW DRU-710A
Disc : DVD-R , RITEKG [RiTEK Corporation]
Speed : Max
ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
Scanned range : 0 - 2286130
Sampling count : 112833
Errors : 0
PI Max : 145
PI Average : 21.02
PI Total : 359653
PIF Max : 121
PIF Average : 0.12
PIF Total : 2116

The prodiscs were fuji, ritek were maxells, the cmc were(of course)memosux. The pi averages were actually lowest on cmc! WTF? All 3 were very compareable all together (unless Creaky sees something I am missing- very likely!) The fuji ones had 34 errors though. I thought they were known to be good? Looking forward for feedback.

Here's another one. I checked another memosux backup. I made sure I picked one that was a highly compressed one. This is Nip Tuck disc 1. i can't remember for sure, but I believe it was in the 55-65% range.

Date : 8/17/2005 7:28:56 PM
Model : 2-0-0-0 E:SONY DVD RW DRU-710A BY01
Disc : DVD-R , CMC MA [CMC Magnetics Corporation]
Speed : Max
ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
Scanned range : 0 - 2286083
Sampling count : 113096
Errors : 0
PI Max : 273
PI Average : 22.92
PI Total : 394303
PIF Max : 168
PIF Average : 0.23
PIF Total : 4011

It still is very close to the ritek discs. The pi max of 273 was just a singe spike.

Also 1 more thing. I can't run kprobe on my laptop. I get an error at the bottom that says "servo error 030900 after LBH Doh" as it begins to scan. Any ideas?

What make and model dvdrw do you have with your laptop? KProbe only works with lite-on's and rebadged litey's (your sony is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1633S).

interesting kprobe scans, i am surprised that the CMC MAGs even tested out at that level...mine from years ago (the current coasters that i have) are MUCH MUCH worse than your scans...

what particular model laptop from Dell do you have? i am not sure about that so called dvd-burner you mentioned, it is unfamiliar to me. but, as mort already mentioned, kprobe will NOT work on every make and model...lite-ons or rebadged liteons (i have the same sony burner as you deaseil) are compatible.

Laptop is a latitude d500. Dvd drive also says QSI under properties.
Maybe I'll be the 1 to change the AD view of memosux! (DOUBT IT).

hehe, i doubt it as well, :) but, i figured out QSI is the manufacturer, but, according to Dell, it's a combo drive, not a dvd-burner...here is the link i found for it.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en...

seems like it's a slim 24x combo drive...seems like the firmware that you have is what Dell shows as being current, despite it being released in 11/19/2003. :P

i guess your firmware is up to date...but, i have not found anything else to suggest that kprobe will be compatible with it. :)

Does it have to be a burner to do a disc check? Do I need a newer firmware to use kprobe. Would I have to wait for dell to make a new one? Any ideas why my memosux are ok? As long as they read out like that theres no need to back them up to a different media, right? Thanx for the help.

I say again KProbe only works with lite-on's and rebadged litey's. It won't work with your laptop drive. You can use Nero scan disc or dvdinfopro to scan discs on your laptop drive. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

If it was a rebadged or oem litey, KProbe would work for starters. I looked on a firmware site and it showed no indication of it being rebadged or oem litey. Use Nero scan disc, disc quality scan, or dvdinfopro if you want to scan useing that drive.

I've used my version of Nero to use the disc info to see the maker, but I don't have the disc quality on my version. I downloaded my version from the AD page to update my previous version. Is the quality check only on the licensed version? I checked the Nero site, I didn't find a download for it, just the same Nero toolkit I have.

i don't put too much value on PIF scanning, i'm more of a CRC error checking person (and only when you have suspect media too, or just started using a different type of disc). dvdinfopro for instance is good at CRC scanning discs. that Prodisc burn with 34 errors is one to do a CRC check on first of all. (Sorry it's far too early for all the other numbers!). i think i've mentioned it in the first link in my sig, but for instance, just cus a disc goes thru a PIF scan with zero errors, does not mean it has no errors, for that i would use a CRC scan, which should hopefully find any corruption). Just as a 100% successful burn in, say Nero, does also not mean there will be no corruption.

i only have to do this once in a while, ie if the Nero buffers go splat if ever (i stupidly) surf during a burn.

hmm, did you have these discs in direct sunlight or extensive heat? I've had maybe 1 or 2% of my discs become unplayable for some strange reasons and those discs were properly cared for in perfect ideal conditions. Princo i've read many times had their discs seem to degrade after a period of time..but Memorex uses many manufacturer's from what i've read so that's odd...maybe you should stick with Taiyo Yuden.
