Hi Guys

This is a bit of a long one so stick with me please. I recently decided to re-format my hard drive(big mistake)after one problem an then another. I didn't have a version of windows xp home edition, so I used a version of xp professional. Let me start by saying up until this point I was burning DVD's just fine using Shrink and Nero.

When I initially had my writer installed, it was done at a pc repair shop and I don't remember them giving me any driver disc etc...

When I got everything set back up, windows claimed that it did recognize My writer which is a Toshiba SD-R5372.

Now here is my problem. It plays DVD's just fine, but when I try to burn one, although you can clearly see that something has been burnt onto the disc, they just won't play. I get an error message something like; Cannot play disc, as disc is not formatted.

I am using Maxell DVD-R media which worked just fine before the change over. My writer is only 2 months old.

Someone said it will be a driver problem, but I would like a second opinion on this, as I can't understand why it would even play a dvd or even burn some kind of image, if it was a driver problem.

Please can anyone shed some lite on this?

Thanks!!

Borrow another DVD-burning driver from some friend and test that.

If it will work -> Your driver is proken
If it will not work -> shange IDE cable and test again

And have u update firmware?
Have u close the session? (when burning)
No changes if u burn with DVD + or - or RW?

What software are you using to burn with ?

Nero ?

Roxio?

I think your driver problem might be with your ASPI layer. In general the ASPI layer is what helps your hardware communicate with each other.

Here is a link :

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?cat=/Pr...
Quote:
The ASPI layer (Advanced SCSI Programmer's Interface) is part of the operating systems Windows 95 and Windows 98.

Quote:
However, the ASPI-layer can sometimes be overwritten or damaged by other software and various drivers, making it incompatible with your software / hardware environment. .

Another interesting quote:
Quote:
A second possibility of re-establishing the ASPI-layer consists in downloading ASPIINST.EXE, which should be of special interest for NT 4.0, W2k and XP users, for ASPI is no longer included in the operating system. Since 1997, Microsoft has no longer been supporting ASPI; since then, the official interface has been NT SCSI Pass Through Interface (SPI1). Up to now, however, only one programme for burning CDs, Feurio, makes use of this possibility of direct access to hardware.
I have used Adaptec download in the past, Good Luck

I have used Adaptecs program sucessfully. And with NO problems at all. The last line sounded a little ambiguous, like I was throwing you to the wolves.....

Take the file you downloaded and put it in a NEW folder on your desktop. Unzip it there, in the new folder. There should be apprx. 22 files and folders. One of which is ASPICHK, that you can use to check your current configuration.

The main file you want is INSTALL.bat, and read the README :

VI. Installation of ASPI
============================================================
1. Run INSTALL.BAT with the target operating system
command line option specified:

X86 ( for Windows 98/ME/NT/2000 )
XP32 ( for Windows XP 32-bit )
XP64 ( for Windows XP 64-bit )

e.g. "INSTALL.BAT X86"

2. INSTALL.BAT will prompt you to specify which operating
system to install for if you did not specify one in Step 1).

a) If you are installing for X86 systems for either
Windows 98/ME/NT/2000 then ASPIINST.EXE will be invoked
and the rest of the installation process will be carried
out.
b) If you are installing for X86 or Itanium systems the
batch file will invoke REG_XP.EXE to make the necessary
registry entries and then copy the operating system
specific files to the appropriate location. The operating
system path is determined by the environment variable
%windir%.

For Win XP 32-bit:
ASPIXP.SYS will be copied to %windir%\system32\drivers\ASPI32.SYS
WNASPIXP.DLL will be copied to %windir%\system32\WNASPI32.DLL

For Win XP 64-bit:
ASPI64.SYS will be copied to %windir%\system32\drivers\ASPI32.SYS
WNASPI64.DLL will be copied to %windir%\system32\WNASPI32.DLL

3. Reboot the system to enable the ASPI driver.

VII) Status Codes for ASPIINST.EXE
