I recently backed up a dvd from a friends back up disc.It played on my cpu and not my stand alone. So I tried to view his copy and it did the same. I copied direct disc to disc.
So now if I'm copying from an unknown media what is the best thing to do?
Sorry if I am in the wrong forum.

Hi there,

If your DVD Burner can read it on your workstation, RIP it to your HD with DVD Decrypter (or your favorite ripper).

If you can't read it/rip it, you won't even be able to copy it.

If you can RIP it on your HD, then your ok for the 1st past.

Then reburn it slowly 2x or 4x on quality media.

is it a DVD-R or DVD+R that you're burning to?

If it's a DVD+R some stand alone players don't suport the + format so that could be part of the problem...

... I've had problems with changing formats when copying ... you know, the source is +R and copied to a -R or vice versa ... Is this the case here?

... As Creaky said DVD Info Pro will work to ID the disc ... http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

... I use DVDDecrypter (in iso mode) to read to HDD, then DVDDecrypter (in iso mode) to write to a new disc ...

In my single drive backup pc, I prefer DVD Decrypter : Mode-ISO read/Mode-ISO write.DVD Decrypter is a more aggressive ripper.

Or use DVD Shrink like a normal backup. It shouldn't need any compression-thus no re-authoring. Your friend's backup copy may have a smaller backup target than yours,so a little compression may be needed.

Rip it to your hard drive first, then burn. Re-ripping on the fly can cause some issues.

One important note: Hopefully your friends use quality media and a 4x burn speed max. This will lower the errors and make it easier to re-rip their copies.

Yes I would do is read it with Decrypter to an ISO File and then write the Iso File that you create with Decrypter back to DVD
