The dvd gets half way through its check on dvd srhink, then gives error message.Have tyred dvd decrypter and half way through the read it says (failed to read sector 2067621 l-ec uncorrectable error)

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have either a bad scratch there or a bad press. Take the movie back and exchange it for a better one
