Birthday is on the 25th of August, and I want some form of modded ps2 by then!!!
Now, I've been reading the forums for literally about 3 hours today, aside from the other days I've browsed. I've learnt how to back up games, what programs to use etc etc.
I have a deal offered to me, which until today, is what I was going to take.
A pre modded ps2 slim. Mod chip is a Matrix Infinity SE, and includes a laser saver, and 10 free games. The price is $399(AU) including shipping.
PS2 slims in the shops are roughly $240(AU) at the moment.
I thought that sounded like a good deal, and from what I can tell from these forums, the Matrix Infinity SE is a quality chip that I would have no problems with.
Then I discovered Swap Magic. I downloaded a video of installing a ghost switch which showed the 3 peices being clipped in, the swap magic disc being loaded and then a burnt game being loaded, all under 2 minutes. It looked very appealing.
So, my question. Which should I go for? The pre modded unit, or the ghost switch and swap magic?
Also, the other problem is I'm in Australia, and so far, any sites that have the ghost/magic switch and swap magic discs are USA sites. I found a switch on ebay from UK, that works out to be about $10(AU) with postage added.
The only swap magic discs I can find are about $47 - $50 (AU) 'Buy it now' before shipping.
So another question: Any sites that ship switches and magic swap discs to Australia?
Any help is greatly appreciated. And like I said, it's my birthday in a week!!! Wanna get this sorted so I can get my present!

I say go for the chip if it is a reliable installer that uses genuine Matrix Infinity chips (a lot of fakes out now). Ask to see the chip and it should look like this:
Swap magic is great but you have to patch a few games and whenever you want to play a game you have to redo the whole swap thing and this and that so it gets to be a hassle.
PS: Happy early birthday :-).

Heh heh, thanks for the 'happy birthday', and the quick reply!
Now, I don't know if the guy is reliable or not. He had an ebay auction, and I've just kept his email address and kept in contact. The more I've learnt on these forums, the more I've asked him.
I asked about a laser saver, and also sent him a link to a retail purchase of a Matrix Infinity SE chip and he confirmed it was that one.
He lives in another state to me, and only contact is by email and I don't know him, so only way to confirm would be to send that picture you linked to him and ask if that's the one.
In other news! I found a UK site that will ship internationally.
My brother has an old PS2. His birthday is the 6th of September, and since finding out about swap magic, of course he is interested.
The site I went to, I put in an order (A quote, not actually ordered!) for a ghost switch, a flip top case and 2 sets of swap magic discs. Including postage, the total came to $118(AU), which is only roughly $60(AU) each. With a store bought PS2 slim for $240(AU), that brings mine to roughly $300(AU), making it $99(AU) less than the pre-modded Matrix Infinity SE unit.
So the question now is: Is a Matrix Infinity SE mod chip worth an extra $99(AU)???

Happy B-day by the way
The chip itself is worth about $50 US
The install usually costs about the same.
I am not sure about getting them shipped to
Australia, but i know in the US you can get
the Premodded systems for $265 shipped and that is
with any chip you want.
I would look around, and wait for someone here to respond
on where you can get one that will ship to you, be patient!.
I would not buy it from some guy on Ebay. There is no warranty on that. Buy it from an online store, that way if something does
happen to go wrong you can get them to take care of it.
With Ebay you will just be out of luck.

i can confirm that he is wrong.
many people have chipped PS2's, including me.
i have had mine 9 months with no problems
i know people who have had chips in thiers for
years and still love them.
With the new V12 (slim) there have been cases os people
having their laser burn out. But a $10 laser fix
will stop that.

At the moment, swap magic is looking better, as for less than the modded console, I get to play backups on 2 systems.
Swap magic just seems to easy. I'm just wary because yeah, it just seems too simple that 3 bits of plastic and a disc can work. I'm not saying it doesn't! Just saying it seems to quick and easy to be true!

Brossy,
I'm from Australia and, in my experience, it often takes about 5 five working days to receive an order from overseas. If you buy a PS2 you can go to a computer swap meet (they're often held on weekends - check out http://www.comtrader.com.au/swap/dates.php3 for a list of dates/venues) and you'll find plenty of people there who install chips for a reasonable rate. Many people are getting ripped off buying pre mods online - i.e. they pay for a Matrix Infinity chip but get a clone Matrix Infinity instead etc..I've got two PS2s: V10 DMS4 Pro and V12 Matrix Infinity and I've had no problems so far. For cheap swap magic discs go to coolpc.com.au (about AUS$30). It's not too good/easy to be true, the swap magic discs with those '3 pieces of plastic' do work flawlessly. But if you have an extra few $$ I would suggest going for the mod chip option.

Yoti!!! Thanks heaps!!! That's the exact kind of reply I was looking for!!!
So, the "If you have the extra $" variable, that's a no. So Mod chip is out, aswell as the info you gave about ebay! All the fakes and stuff, I'll forget about that.
The swap meet locations arn't close to me, closest would be the sydney suburbs, but that's a 2 hour train trip.
So, I'm pretty certain I'm going for the swap magic discs from that website!!! Thanks heaps for that Australian site!!! And thanks for confirming the swap magic... not that an Australian opinion hold any more weight than the others in this thread.... ;)
But yeah! Thanks everyone for all your help!!!

Oh! One more thing! Do I need 2 copies of swap magic? Or will backup copies work?

You need an original swap magic set, if thats what your asking. You can't use backup copies of swap magic because you need the swap magic to play backups how would you get a swap magic backup to work?

Yes, Swap Magic will work fine. And initially it is
the cheaper way to go. But not in the long run.
Why you ask:
Well a good chip (DMS4 or Matrix Infinity) has flash
upgrades (that you download for free) that update the
features of your chip. So it will not be out of date. They
can add new features that they know people can use, like the
ability to play DVD9 (dual layer) back up games, which Swap Magic
can not do. They are also working on a cheat
(Ar Max/Codebreaker Pro) system for the DMS4 chips that will be really sweet.
With a chip you will not have to rebuild or patch
any games except for online play, i think for online play even
a chipped PS2's game must be patched but am not 100% sure since i
do not do any online play. With Swap magic you will.
The chip is just the all around better system. When Swap Magic
comes out with new features then you just have to shell out
another $30 for a new set of discs.
Either will work for you. But read up on both and be
well informed before you make your chioce.

I think I'll stick with swap magic for now until it starts to fail/annoy me. If that's a long time, it'll probably be time to get a PS3! Or, I'll be more informed and be ready to fork out the cash for a mod chip.
I think I'll get the swap magic and use aswell for a learning experience.
Again, thanks for all the help/comments/advice, you guys have been life savers!

Looks like this thread is pretty much over, but since no one pointed it out, "Matrix Infinity SE" is another Matrix clone chip, not at all affiliated with the original.

Yes it is a clone chip (i'm surprised so many regulars came by and didn't point that out to you). Also, its best to steer clear of ebay when it comes to mods. ebay's policy does not allow the sale of anything that can allow a console to play backups or imports (so swap discs and modchips). Also, there are some pretty unscrupulous sellers on ebay.
