So I just got myself the new pioneer dvr-110 drive, and a cake of 8x dvd-r hub printable media from supermediastore.com, which turned out to be from CMC. Problem is, it can't seem to get past writing the lead in before giving me errors. I'm not near the desktop now, so I can't give you the specific ones, but will later if it will help.

The media is CMC, and I have not made any firmware updates to the drive, as I don't think there are any (am I wrong, please?). The media seems to burn ok in my old drive, albeit at a snails pace.

Now I've read about trouble with media, but to me honest, I've never had it before. I have a dvr-104 as well, and when I first got it years ago I had to be a bit careful what 1x media to buy, but since then have had no trouble. When I go home from school and use my parents computers (dvr-108 or 109, can't remember, and some external thing, TDK maybe), I've never had any trouble with any media.

It looks like the older pioneer drive supported this cmc 8x dvd-r media, so I'm surprised at the trouble I'm having. I've only tried like 4 or 5 discs, is it possible the stack just started poorly?

Or should I give up all hope and order some TY or Verb, and wait as patiently as possible for it to arrive?

Basically two points to this message:
1. Request for help; you gentlemen have a heck of a lot more experience than I do, and I would appreciate it immensely if there was a solution, or if I could be told it was hopeless so I can move on with my life.
2. A heads up to people thinking about the new dvr-110 who are sitting on a pile of CMC media to burn off.

Anyway, thanks.

... First of all, update your firmware - All drives seem to benefit from this ...

.. Secondly, Give yout DVR-110 a chance and buy some good media. Sony, Verbatim, Maxell or anything made by Taiyo Yuden will satisfy your burning desires ...

. Office Depot has 100 packs of 16X Verbatim discs on sale through the 20th for $37.99 - Your Pioneer will love these babies ...

This drive is brand new and the firmware that came in it is the only available. They do not even have it listed at the Pioneer site. Take the advice of trying other media, because the drive is definitely not liking these, eventually when they do have a firmware update it may correct the problem with the disks you bought. See if you can return them to supermedia and get better.

agreed with the above suggestions...i have a pioneer dvr-109 and it is somewhat picky about GOOD QUALITY/POOR QUALITY media, and in your particular case...bottom of the rung media~

if the new dvr-110 is ANYTHING like the dvr-109, you will NOT have much success with crappy discs, my dvr-109 already coughs up the old CMC MAG discs i had in the past and won't even attempt to read them, let alone burn to them.

my Pioneer simply ADORES the Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media, so, that would be my honest suggestion to you (assuming the dvr-110 is similiar) also, once the firmware update IS available, perhaps in a month or 2, i would definitely upgrade; it SHOULD help, but, crap media is still crap media regardless of firmware, save yourself the trouble and get some GOOD quality media for much more success in the near future. good luck

the others have replied far more eloquently than i can.

..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner..... - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/195438

the only good, consistent burns to be had from CMC is from a wood burner at 500C

Pioneer Europe website has new firmware for the drive (1.17 I believe). I installed it and my hitherto useless CMC media now burns at 8x and seems to work fine. Still won't use it for anything indispensible, but at least its not a total write-off.

My feelings re CMC aside, was today looking on www.svp.co.uk for a dvd burner for a colleague and they do the pioneer dvr-110d. Anyway, the point is that there are a few warnings on the site re these drives firmware and CMC disks..

Noted on the media page? I see it for Datasafe.

Seems to work with the new firmware though, but we'll see how consistently. Too bad Supermediastore didn't put up a warning as soon as they had complaints (me for instance). I guess the drive isn't popular enough in the US yet to worry about it. To their credit, they did offer to take them back, shipping at my expense of course.

I think you just have a bad batch of discs, I have had no problem burning TDK CMC Mag media with the same unit

@MR.Burnz - my previous reply shows that there are issues with this drive and CMC media..

I think the discs are fine. The problem, in my humble estimation, seems to have been the firmware. Once updated, the CMC works fine. Perhaps you got a later drive that came with the newer firmware, perhaps you were just lucky; I don't know.

Before firmware - would not even finish writing lead in on CMC media

Update firmware

After firmware - consistently burns CMC fine at rated speed

No other changes were made.

as long as you got it working Tortious, that is all we can really ask for~ :) but so you know, firmware usually helps a LOT in these situations with the newer drives, but as you stated earlier, i wouldn't put anything indispensable on the CMC MAGs (personal opinion of course) because the data/video that i HAVE put on the dreaded CMC MAGs in the past PERSONALLY, can no longer be read or played in my computer AND my stand alones~ :) i have naturally been the victim of what i consider crap media, so i suggest others to get some reliable media if they want it to last. *personal experience* good luck~ :)
