Newbie needs help in ripping to a single .mpg file

Can anyone suggest a process for taking a DVD to a single high quality .mpg file for playing off a hard drive. Quality is much more important than size. I've tried multiple methods but I can't seem to get it right. Thanks for any suggestions.

Can it be AVI? If can read more,if not just skip this...

So we need these:
DVD Decrypter
http://www.dvddecrypter.com/index.php?act=download
AutoGK - DVD->XviD/DivX
http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads

1. Use ifo mode to put DVD to HD (DVD Decrypter)
2. Open AutoGK

3. Select source, Select Audio and target
4. Select Sub, How many files and pick Advanced Setting
5. well just do what u need and OK

Thanks guys,
Im not the original poster but I was just going to ask the same question today. Im a video editor and I backed a few videos up on DVD. I didn't expect that I would have to add more videos to the disc. This helps a lot. Now I can just pull the video out and make a new disc.

Thanks for the input. I am not sure whether either the D-Link media server software or the Microsoft Media Connect software will handle AVI's or whether the quality will be worthwhile but I'll give it a try. Thanks again.
