I have a V1-V3 playstation. I'm trying to figure out what options I have. From what I researched, I can do the one where i need to solder it or the swap disc.
Beside being annoying, does the swap disc work fairly well? What does the flip top do? Is it easier to swap? This will read all my backups correct?
Also with soldering, I'm extremely handy however never soldered before. Is it realitively simple to do? I see the one they recommend is like 17 wires or such.
Any pointers or recommendations are appreciated. I'm considering selling mine and buying a new one where I can just plug the dumb chip in.
Swap disc works pretty well. You'll need to apply patches sometimes, and always to double layer disks. Also, there are different swap discs for PS2 and PS1 backups (Swap Magic and Breaker Pro respectively).
As for the modchip... relative to what? If you've never soldered before, a PS2 modchip isn't a good place to start. Sure you could get a newer PS2 and install a DMS4 EZI. Would be kind of costly though, and its getting kind of hard to find chubby PS2s now that the slim versions have completely saturated the usual retail channels.
Is there a better swap disc? Are you saying if I wanted to copy my games I would need to use dual layer media with the swap disc?
I'd like to for example, copy my FF games into back ups. Since they are multiple discs I was thinking of using DVD+R's. For those to play, would I need the soldered version?
Also my system being so old. Is there any chance of it not working? Someone a long time ago mentioned that because of it's age, it might burn the laser out.
Thanks for your help Jashsu and hopefully I can get some answers to the following.
No, I mean if the original game is double layer, then you will need to patch/rebuild it down to one layer (or apply the Toxic DL patch).
"I'd like to for example, copy my FF games into back ups. Since they are multiple discs I was thinking of using DVD+R's."
I assume you mean the PS1 FFs here? Answer is its not possible. Only Breaker Pro disc can boot PS1, and there is certainly no way it can handle multiple images on one disc (I doubt it can even boot dvd-r media, but im not sure about that)
I just read about the HD Loader as well. I would need to buy the network adapater and just a regular IDE harddrive. Can you load back up games on there? Is there a thread that explains this? Where do you find more information on the HD Advance or whatever it is called.
You can find info on the FAQ sticked at the top of the General topic forum. (Once more proof no one except me ever reads the damn FAQs). For hd loading, you can either buy a hd loading disc (HD Advance) or use the memory card exploit to put the hard drive loading program on your memory card. To learn more about the memory card exploit, search "mc exploit" or "ps2 independence" on google.
