I was backing up a movie and I realized during the burn process that nero automatically set the burn at 16x....and I went ahead.
The burn went fine even though these sony's were packaged at 1x-8x.
I know it burned at that rate because it only took 4 minutes or so.
Why was I able to do this?
Here is what Dvd Identifier found:

... Lots of the higher quality media will allow you to overburn ... To be perfectly honest with you though, I wouldn't recommend burning any faster than 4x regardless what the disc is rated at as compatability issues could occur ... this is especially true when using non-booktypeable -R discs and playing discs on older players ...

8x media burning at 16x!

Very typical in these 16x writers. My benqs will only max burn the sony -1x-8x at 12x,but 16x on the plus 1x-8x!

I still stick with 4x though to make sure my stand alones and pc drives have fewer issues with my backups.

Sony08d1 is very good media. It's made in both taiwan and japan, with identical MID codes. No complaints from me on any of the sony 1x-8x media.

Watch your burn settings on all 8x media. It also overburns on verbatim/ritek/ and maxell 8x media, for me.
