i looked at another thread but it doesnt seem like the same problem.

i just bought my computer 3 weeks ago. there isnt much installed on it. there is still a lot of memory left. we started backing up dvds and burning them about 2 weeks ago and they were going very fast. it would take about 40 minutes to do a deep analysis and backup total. then about 8 minutes to burn. we delete all the movies off the computer after backing them up. all of a sudden, its taking almost an hour for the deep analysis and another hour for the backup...and then over a half hour for the burning. what is happening? when we are deleting these movies, are they really deleting? i read somewhere that they could be stored in the registry somehow and taking up space. is this true? do i need some sort of registry cleaner? i checked the cpu usage...its about 29% for dvd shrink...and the rest for the system idle process.

thanks for any help. and i'm no computer whiz...

Make sure burner and any other optical drives are operating in DMA mode, not Pio. Go to Device Manager, IDE controllers. You burner and other optical drive will be on either the primary, or more likely the secondary IDE channel. Right click all IDE channels and select properties, then advanced settings. Make sure both, or for that matter all drives on either channel, are set to DMA if available. If burner is indicating Pio, that's your problem. Once set to enable DMA, reboot and check the settings again to make sure all drives are now on DMA. If Pio turns up again. change setting to DMA if aavilable, the go back to Device Manager/IDE controllers and remove or disable that IDE controller (primary or secondary) containing the channel/drive that keeeps going back to Pio. Then reboot. Windows will find everything again as "new hardware", with the DMA settings enabled.
