It really doesn't matter so long if they are compatible with your burner, cdrom, and/or dvd player. As far as the pc is concerned, you can use e.g. Nero Info Tool to check what kind of dics may be used. As for dvd players, consult the manual.

if you want to burn the AVI file straight onto a dvd disk, the chances are they will need converting first to dvd compliant files,
thats only if you want to play them on a dvd player
unless your standalone dvd player plays AVI file, only the newer ones do
if you have DVD+R disks and dont want to buy any DVD-R,you can set the booktype(if burner allows it) to dvd-rom,in which case they will play on a standalone,(after converting of course)

as a rule most dvd players prefer DVD-R,and not dvd+r

dvd+r are capable of changing to dvd-rom type

if you want to convert the AVI,use vso's dvixtodvd,
then burn the whole ts folder with an app that does, like Nero burning rom or clonedvd2
