Hi, bit of a strange (or maybe not so strange) problem here.

I've got a PC with DL DVD+/-RW and I'm using mine purely for burning backups of my HD and for burning movies. I use Nero, DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink, VSO CopyToDVD and dvdSanta. I use whatever cheap DVD media I can get my hands on and am recently using RiDisc & RiDisc Xtreme.

My mum has an iMac G4 with DVD-R which she uses solely for burning home movies that she's edited using Final Cut Pro. The burning software I can't remember, think it's iDVD. She's using Ritek printables, her first box of 100 burnt fine, second box started to stick.

I play DVDs I've burnt on my DVD player in the lounge and they play with the occasional pause, sometimes it can be bad.

My mum recently burnt a DVD my brother made using Final Cut Pro and it player fine on her DVD player but when she took it to her camcorder club and played it there it paused quite badly. Everyone else who took DVDs along to play that they made didn't stick.

I've experimented on my PC by changing the transfer mode to PIO only, leaving the machine alone while decrypting and leaving it alone while burning and nothing seems to make any difference.

We're both burning DVDs using the slowest speed possible.

Please can anyone suggest how we can limit or even stop them pausing? My DVD player is a cheap Aiwa and my mother's is a slightly more expensive Thompson model.

There is a reason some media is cheap ... not all media are made the same.

And ya want your pc to be in DMA mode.

Burning at 4x is fine, and is actually the best speed to burn at IMO. And not all DVD players are compatible playing backups ... but most of the time it does come down to media

As flip stated using quality media does make a difference in pauses, skips, freezes and pixellation. Also check and make sure that the firmware on your burners is up to date, this will help the burner in the recognition of media. Put your drives back in DMA mode it works much better.

@ZebUK hi :) i agree with all that flip218 and arniebear say's
you'll find that your ridisc extreme should id as RITEKG05 8x which is really GOOD
the other ridisc depends on the colour of the face of the disc if it's purple they should id RITEKGO4 4x which also is really GOOD
again the ones your mum is useing RITEK printables should id RITEKG05 8x as above for quality
if the face is blue they will probably be CMC MAG which is BAD..BAD..BAD

hello ZebUK welcome to ad. here is a link for a must have this app vso inspector (free) will a identify your drive(burner) and what kind of media format that it will be capable of reading/writing it is also very good for identifying the true nature of your media(blank disks) like gurnard suggested these should be ritek decent quality disk's but you never know as some company will buy what ever crap they can get there hands on for a bargain which leads to half of they're media being crap and half being decent
