(Long post, apologies in advance. Feel free to answer some or all of the questions, any information is appreciated.)

I have a PS2 that I bought around X-Mas 2002 but I have no idea what version it is, perhaps the purchase date will enable someone to tell me, or someone can tell me how to find out. I've recently become interested in installing a hard drive and/or purchasing a mod chip or even possibly purchasing a pre-modded PS2 depending on a few different factors. I'm also interested in installing a network adapter (I have broadband already). I've been reading these forums and have picked up some useful information, but I figured it would be best if I just laid everything on the table and asked for some advice and answers to a number of questions I have.

First I'd like to start with the hard drive option. I found a list of compatible drives and see a 200MB Maxtor that is on the list and is very cost effective. It would be my drive of choice if I were going to install one. My questions regarding a hard drive are as follows:

1. Is anything else required for installation besides the drive (and a screwdriver presumably)?
2. Do I have to do anything to the drive before I physically install it?
3. How difficult is it to install the drive? I'm very technically proficient when it comes to PCs, but I have never touched my PS2 for anything other than to play a game.
3. Do I have to install any software onto the drive in order to use it?
4. Will I be able to copy all of my games to the hard drive and run them without every requiring the CD?
5. If so, what's to stop people from renting games and copying them to their drive (Not that I would do that of course, just hypothetically speaking? :-) )
6. Is there anything else I need to know about installing a hard drive that I haven't asked?

Next topic is network adapters:

1. Based on my purchase date, does it appear a network adapter will work with my version? I beleive they were being offered when I purchased my PS2.
2. Is there more than one make/model of network adapter or are they all the same?
3. Do I have to pay for any service other than my cable ISP (Time Warner)?
4. Do I need any other cables or does the coax cable connect directly to the network adapter?
5. Is there anything else I need to know about network adapters that I haven't asked?

Mod solutions:

1. At this point in time, what is the recommended mod solution for being able to use backup copies of PS2 games? (I imagine I'll get a few different answers to this one)
2. Where would you recommend I purchase the mod solution that you suggest?
3. What is the installation difficulty level associated with whatever mod solution you're going to suggest?
4. Does the mod solution you suggest result in any parts existing outside the original PS2 case?
5. What's the EASIEST mod solution?
6. What's the downside, if any, of using a solution such as the slide disk and Swap Magic? (I don't know much about this solution)
7. If I installed a HD into my PS2, wouldn't it pretty much eliminate the need for a mod chip, assuming I was only going to utilize original PS2 discs that I either own, rent, or friends bring over? In other words, the main (legal) argument for installing a MOD chip is to ensure that I'm protected if my disc gets damaged or lost, but if I install the game to the HD and put the disc away in a safe place, it serves the same function the way I see it. Is it "legal" to install a rented game to a hard drive, and if so, is it "legal" to continue to use it after the game is returned?
8. If I were to install a HD and a mod solution, are there any issues I need to be aware of?
9. Will the PS2 physically accomodate a hard drive, network adapter, and mod solution simultaneously? Are there certain mod solutions that will interfere with an installed HD or network adapter?
10. Given the difficulty level associated with some mod solutions and the fact that my PS2 is nearly 3 years old, would anyone recommend purchasing a new, pre-modded PS2?
11. If so, where would you recommend I purchase one and are there any benefits to the new slimline model? (I haven't looked it up at all)
12. Is there anything else I need to know about mod solutions that I haven't asked?

Copying PS2 discs:

1. What software would you recommend for backing up/copying PS2 discs? Is Alcohol 120% a good program?
2. Which media are the majority of PS2 games using? (CD, DVD5, DVD9)
3. Can I copy a CD to a DVD-R? (I'm sure I can technically, but will it work properly if the original medium was a CD and I copy it to a DVD +/-R?) The reason I ask is because for example, many DVD players will play MP3 CDs, but will not play MP3s copied to a DVD-R, even though the DVD player can of course play DVD +/-R discs, as long as it contains a DVD-Video project. I'm guessing though that since some PS2 games are on CD and some are on DVD, it doesn't matter if you copy a PS2 game from CD to DVD +/-R.
4. Do I need anything other than a high speed computer, CD/DVD +/-R drive, backup software, DeCSS software (in some cases), HD space, and media to backup my discs?
5. Will both DVD +R and DVD -R discs work, and are there issues or advantages with either of the two mediums such as speed, compatibility, etc?
6. Is there anything else I need to know about backing up my PS2 discs?

I think that covers just about everything. I know that's a lot of questions but I think they're all relevant and necessary for me to get a complete picture of my options. Thanks in advance for any help.

Whoah thats a lot
1. All you need to install the drive is a network adaptor.
2. NO you do not nead to do anything other than set the jumper lead to master.
3. It is very easy to install the hdd just plug it straight into the network adaptor then slide it in the expanson bay.
4. You will be able to copy basicly all games but you need to buy software or (free) setup a memory card exploit for added compatability.
5. Nothing stops you from just renting games out and copying them to it.
6. Only that you cannot play online yet with a hdd game. And you need to have swap magic to put backup games on it if you dont have a mod.

1. The network adaptor will work with any version ps2.
2. I think there are but there arent really any difference between them.
3. No ps2 online is free other than your broadband fee.
4. The network cord plugs straight into your network adaptor where your computer would normally go.
5. Nope thats about all.

1. Depends if you want to void your waranty and get a chip. I used swap magic and its great but the swaping get annoying after a while,so i got a hdd.
2.?
3. Yes installing a mod chip takes medium to advanced soldering to do,hdd is very easy just plug and play, swap magic is also rather easy once you know what your doing.
4.?
5. Easiest mod would be hdd very easy to use.
6. The swap disc/slide card can damage the disctray/motor if used incorrectly.
7. Yes it does remove the need for a mod chip but no it is not legal to hire a game and keep it on the hdd.
8. No issues
9. Yes it would. The only issue of having a mod is that it needs a sleep/disable mode so you can go online.
10. ?

1. DVD decryptor is one of the best FREE dvd copy software out there even though due to legal issues they are no longer updating it it still works on most if not all games.
2. Most games are on DVD-5 but some like God Of War and GT4 are on DVD-9.
3. ?
4. Thats all you need to backup games.
5. On older version ps2 + dont work as well as - or at all whats your SCPH number on the back of your console so i can tell you what version you have and work out wether or not yours can play both?
6. Thats about all you need to know

Thanks a lot for the input, it answered many of my questions. I look forward to hearing feedback on my questions regarding the various mod solutions (referring to chips like the Matrix Infinity, DMS4 etc). I've also seen recommendations for the Flip Top so I'm wondering what people's opinions are of that as well.

A couple questions based on your reply...

Forgive the ignorance, I'm confused as to why I have to have a network adapter to install a HD. Without having had any hands on experience installing a HD on a PS2, it seems like a network adapter and the installation of a HD (based on their respective names) would be mutually exclusive. The network adapter serves as a tray for holding the HD? I guess I'll have to do a little research into it online, off hand it doesn't seem to make sense.

Swap Magic will work for the purpose of loading backup copies on to the hard drive? I saw someone else ask the same question but nobody had replied to it.

With respect to your answer regarding hard drive installation, question #4, what software options are there? Are you referring to programs such as HD Loader? If so, is that program recommended and what other software options are there for accessing the games on the HD? Not familiar with memory card exploits, how do they fit into the picture and can you provide an example?

Thanks again...

You need the Network adaptor to physiclly connect the HD to the ps2 the ps2 its self does not have an IDE port the network adaptor does.
If you buy retail HDadvance discs then they can be swaped but other soft ware needs swap magic.
HDloader,HDadvance (ripoff of Hdloader, but with better compatability)are the only software. Theres a free hdloader on the net but need swap magic to load.
The other way to get HD software is to setup the memory card exploit which is when you place a program on your memory card and whenever youi insert the trigger disc (ps1 game) instead of the game loading it loads up a program. I recomend this because the hdloader for memory card has added compatibility that the others dont. So instead of having a HDloader cd you just insert a ps1 game and hdloader loads. And it takes up very little space.

To be a bit more clearer about the HDD on the Network adapter... The network adapter was made to allow certain hard drives to be directly plugged into it. Although Sony will not advertise or support doing this prolly because of legal issues with copying games (even though they sell their own smaller version). Buy the network adapter and you'll clearly see where the hard drive plugs in. There are certain hard drives that don't fit, but a little research on google will find you ways around this....

I am interested in this hdloader on memory card. I am basically new to alot of this too. I am about to purchase hdloader and have a few questions.

1. Someone stated that the retail copy of hdloader can be copied. Does that mean when I get my hdloader, I can use dvdecrypter and make a copy and it will work without a MOD chip?

2. I ordered hdloader last week.. the quebec company ripped me off (my credit card is handling that issue), but can someone recommend a reliable USA store to purchase this and perhaps a MOD chip (solderless).

3. How do you get the hdloader (or any software) on the memory card?

4. The memory card exploit... you say insert trigger disc (ps1 game disc). I don't have a ps1 game, but can get one... are you saying if I insert a ps1 game, there will be an option to read off the memory card, or is this automatic?

Thanks...

Yes hdloader can be copied but you still need a mod/swap magic to load it.
Wouldnt know where to buy a mod/hdloader been using mem card exploit to play my backups for ages.
To get software onto your memory card you need to have either ARMAX a fairly new Gameshark/Codebreaker with USB support OR Swap Magic.
For swap magic go to http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 and make a exploit CD If you have a USB device then go to www.exploitstation.com and check out their tutorials page.
When you make the exploit you insert a ps1 games disc id into a file that the ps2 checks for, each time it boots up if it recognises the ID as the one in your exploit then instead of loading the game it will load up whatever program you have. There are programs that allow you to create menus with lots of different programs on and choose what you want to load.
