Burned/recorded dvd disc won't play on dvd players

I have a Sony VAIO VGC-RB34C. A few months ago, I recorded a DVD in Media Center and the disc I used was a Sony DVD+R/RW disc. It was successfully made and I could view it on my dvd player.
However, just recently I tried to burn some DVDs. I used both NERO and Sonic RecordNow! I burned it on TDK DVD+R RW discs. However, it won't play on my Philips DVD player, nor my friend's Samsung DVD player. I tried recording the same video in Media Center onto a TDK DVD+R disc and it won't play on the DVD players.
Any information or advice given is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I don't recommend TDK dvd+r's because there is about a 50/50 chance they were made by cmc magnetics which is garbage media and causes a lot of problems. You can find out who made your TDK's useing this free proggy. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Thanks for replying Mort81. The TDK DVD+R's are made by cmc magnetics.
So, now I tried burning the videos on GQ DVD+R's, which is made by SONY. The result: I can actually view the DVD on my PC. However, when I put in DVD players, it keeps "loading" and says "No Disc."

What is the manufacturer and ID of the GQ discs useing dvd identifier? What make and model is your dvdrw?
I recommend useing only good, high quality, proven media for video reproduction such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, branded sony, fuji (made in japan) or maxell. You may have a compatability issue with dvd+r's on your stand-alone dvd player but depending on you dvdrw you might be able to booktype the DVD+R media to dvd-rom (most compatable format).

Did you remember to FINALIZE your DVD+R after burning it? This is critical for playing the disc on other players. But even then, some older DVD players (4+ years) have problems reading DVD+R and DVD-R.

True, thus the reason for asking what make and model dvdrw to determine if it is capable of booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom.

Personally, I think Quaility of burn is more important than booktype. I have DVD players that do not read booktyped DVD+R Ritek R03s, but do read DVD+R YUDEN000-T02 not booktyped. The R03s are good discs, but with picky players, they may not be good enough.
Booktyping may help you out, but you would be better off with Taiyo Yuden Media (I hear that Verbatim Datalife plus are as about as good). I use the Fuji 8x DVD+R made in Japan. Also, you could try burning at a slower speed, as it may just be that your DVD player is super picky. I burn at 4x, but if you have bad media or a picky DVD player you may have to go to 2x.
What is the model of your DVD player. This may help us out in solving your problem.

I agree that good media is the 1st step to a good, compatable playback but bitseting should even increase your compatability.
JaguarGod, you said your R03's booktyped dvd-rom wouln't play in your stand-alone but if you booktype your yuden's dvd-rom they will still play won't they? Will those R03's play if you leave the booktype DVD+R? I'm curious.

Yes, the R03s left to DVD+R work fine. With the booktyped discs it told me that there is no disc inserted and to insert a disc.
I cannot test the TY discs, because I no longer have the Plextor Burner. I figured it is not worth the extra $60 to booktype if it will not do anything for my DVD players. I now have a Pioneer DVR-A09.
The one that played the DVD+R and not the booktyped -ROM is an old RCA with DivX. It very bulky and I would estimate it to be at least 5 years old.
The one that only plays the TY discs is a Samsung DVD-611.
I used to also have a DVD Recorder that I used to back up some of my VHS tapes. This automatically booktyped to DVD-ROM as well, but they only work on my newer DVD players (the Samsung and RCA also rejected these as well as the ps2).
I came to the conclusion that the Booktyped -ROM discs were burned at a lower quality. I used a px-716a to burn the -ROM discs. Also, I assume that even though the DVD Recorder worked at 1x, both the Pioneer and Plextor were better than this. Other than the different Hardware eveything else was the same (RAM, CPU, software, etc... the recorder was stand alone though) I even did one movie from the same ISO two times one being -ROM and the other +R and the +R worked on the RCA and the -ROM did not.
I think if the media is good enough, it will still trick the DVD player. My DVD-ROM drive reads reads most of my burned movies, but not all. However, if it does read them it reads them as DVD-ROM even though I know the Pioneer is not booktyping to -ROM, but the ones that I know are booktyped to -ROM, it will not read at all.
But just to summerize (sort of) I burned all my booktyped -ROM discs with a Plextor PX-716A and all my +R booktype discs with a Pioneer DVR-A09. I did all my vcr backups with a DVD Recorder (I think it was Apex). All of this was with the Ritek R03s. Now I only use Fuji 8x made in Japan, though I still have some thermal TY left. These give me the best results and somehow have fewer PI/PO errors than a factory pressed DVD. They are also great for repairing/reburning discs burned on crap media.

Everybodys set up and experiences are different. Personally I have had far better luck and performance with good quality DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom then again I only use the booktype utility programs made for my brand of dvdrw's eg. lite-on booktype utility and benq booktype management utility. I don't think the success is as great useing a generic tool to booktype DVD+R to dvd-rom eg. DVD Decrypter and Nero but thats just my opinion. I will never again use anything except good quality DVD+R media (verbatum right now) booktyped to dvd-rom with my burners booktype utility's. This is what works best for me and a lot of others as well.
